Hey man! I was in Sri lanka/Thailand/India/Indonesia and yes, it's really possible to live with $1k/month for one person in Bali near ocean for example. You will eat tasty food and have fun all time!

Firstly I'm sure Nomad capitalist mentioned something about PH recently changing residency things for the worse.
Having lived in Asia most of last year (coming back to blighty for the pandemic). Doing business with the west with the Time zones is a fucking pain! staying up till 3am to make client phone calls isn't great. Surviving in a poor country isn't great, when shit hits the fan you need that means and funds to fly back to where your from. A lot of expats couldn't afford flights let alone to fly back to the west and live when the pandemic was starting (bare in mind we all thought it was going to be 100x worse than what it turned out to be.) So even when covid is over you still need to half bugout money. Be it you've pissed off some shady expats (A lot of ex-crims in SEA avoiding the law) or you've got to fly back for a sibling or friends weddings or unfortunately a gravely sick parent you still have to have bug out money. You'll run through savings faster than you think in SEA its deceptive. People in SEA are starting to get really fed up with western Sexpats and fuckups in SEA, Thailand especially but you're not seen as a greek god like you use to. The Chinese are the guys who now flash the cash and get the girls (Seriously). Best thing to do... have a base in the west and a base in SEA. Spend the summer in the west when its beautiful and the winters in SEA. When you're in SEA you can put your property or Airbnb and vice versa when you're in the west. Also, health care is bad, health insurance is a must and I'd still recommend you fly back to have surgery in the west in most of SEA. |

Pack a big bag. Go live in the city of choice for 3 months. Work out a deal with a home owner so its a short term lease.
99% of people go back home before the end of 3 months. Getting the food stuff you are used to may not be possible. Getting PC equipment may not be possible or you may have to settle. Getting clothing you prefer may not be possible or you may have to settle. Used to owning and driving a car? May not be possible. Internet connection. May not be as stable or fast. Have a specific life requirement that is less than easy where you currently live may be impossible elsewhere. Think it through before you move. |
You can live a minimalistic "well" if you don't drink, fuck and party. You can't live like a king for $1k a month.
Don't forget many locals have lost their income during Covid. Desperate people do desperate things. That $200 a month beachfront home ain't all it's cracked up to be if you are getting your shit stolen when you go for a swim because you are a target. |

don't party Ok don't fuck Oh hell no |
Life in ASEAN isn't cheap anymore. You could live cheaper in Utah, Serbia or South Africa for sure. As far as living in Asia legally, you would need to be at least 50 years old and hold between 10k$ and 20k$ in the bank to satfisfy yearly visa demands. Alternatively, getting married to a local partner demands similar numbers for folks under 50.
Bouncing back and forth between borders to stretch out limits is getting more and more difficult. Cambodia still gives away 1 and 2 year residency permits. Might be an alternative to TH and PH as it is more likely to fit your budget of 1k$. I don't see how you can live on that budget in the bigger cities of TH/PH at all. Of course the more rural areas are cheaper. |
Not utah either unless you're off grid - and those usually aren't zoned for habitation or perc'ed

99% of people go back home before the end of 3 months. Getting the food stuff you are used to may not be possible. 1- You can get all types of food there, those are international cities ;) not village and if you want to save go to supermarket, i must admit it s a problem at first but if you get some cocking skills this won t be a problem. Getting PC equipment may not be possible or you may have to settle. 2- i personally take mine with me iusse and i have 2 air mac and leNovo Getting clothing you prefer may not be possible or you may have to settle. 3- asia has bestt colthing malls and shops :) you make me laugh, it seems you never been in ASIA before Used to owning and driving a car? May not be possible. 4-Cars are cheap and if you don t have money; BUY Eletronic socctter for 200usd which goes 25Km Internet connection. May not be as stable or fast. 4- some asian countries has unstable internet connection but its there most of time. using rdp and vps helps to get works done quick. Have a specific life requirement that is less than easy where you currently live may be impossible elsewhere. 5- in asia you can get a villa with swimming pool only for 600 usd, real estate and rental is cheap but you must look for what does you feel confortable, this at first need a guide or local friend if not you must city or area well enough, Think it through before you move. 6- of coures, i am only thinking of how s life there currentlly? some friends telling is ok while others are under lockdown so its pretty not clear and yet [/QUOTE] |
Bali
rent a very good guesthouse room with cleaning every day and breakfast, up to $500-$600 month rent a scooter, up to $150/month food, if you will eat good quality fruits + some local fish and other seefood + rise and other local stuff, it would not be more then $300/month So in total - $1k :) But if you will live with you lady for example, and she will work online too, even with not so big income like you will get, in total your life there will be more comfortable then if you live alone. For example, you income $1k/month, her income $1k/month. Total $2k for two. This is big money for Bali. |
