If done right, customers servers could be up and running within minutes somewhere else, if the network is done right

Dmcontent 03-10-2021 03:03 AM

I have a few with them but in Roubaix , but if not mistaken all OVH traffic goes through Strasbourg node

Thankfully no, all OVH traffic doesn't go through a single way ;)

Just checked with support and USA/ Europe node is in Gravelines so all is ok for now, but people using imagify should have problems. all their servers are gone.

Great example on how some hosting giants dont show the real status on the statuspage

https://www.ovh.com/world/community/status/

"everything fine, nothing to see here"

Ferus 03-10-2021 04:22 AM

They say (on their forum) that those with servers in the location, have had their servers removed from the control panel. Can anyone with servers at OVH confirm that?

Asking for a friend at datacenterdynamics.com/

They have removed the sites from the status page (SBG2 and SBG3)

We have a client with one in SBG3, it shows on their panel.

There is a big Pink warning as soon as we log in on customer dashboard:
Warning: We are currently facing a major incident in our DataCenter of Strasbourg. If your production is in Strasbourg, we recommend to activate your Disaster Recovery Plan. Follow incident

We are currently facing a major incident in our DataCenter of Strasbourg with a fire declared in the building SBG2.
Firefighters were immediately on the scene but could not control the fire in SBG2.
The whole site has been isolated, which impacts all our services on SBG1, SBG2, SBG3 and SBG4.
If your production is in Strasbourg, we recommend to activate your Disaster Recovery Plan.
All our teams are fully mobilized along with the firefighters.
We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Estimated 1-2 weeks to restore service to the other servers at the datacenter that didn't burn

Paul&John 03-10-2021 07:59 AM

Is it now a good idea to get an OVH VPS in Canada? :)

Of course - what are the odds they would have two datacenters catch fire in the same week?

The purple smoke is a signal, similarly to what the Vatican when a pope is selected. They are announcing that they found a new electrician.

sure as hell was the most disposable-looking datacenter I have ever seen. Just a bunch of containers

In all seriousness though, there must have been 42k or so servers lost + cabling, hardware, routers, switches, and the building itself. I think 150-250mil easy.

The thing about a fire at OVH is that is primarily going to affect the little guys and I am extremely sympathetic to my fellow hustlers.

If this had been an AWS data center it would be front page on CNN.

leming 03-10-2021 02:21 PM

Nothing to worry about, the insurance will cover everything. (Except the time webmasters will spend looking for new hosting.)
;)

..and all the lost data and down websites.

how many of those clients had offsite backups or failovers?

this will put a lot of sites out of business.

I guess i'm pretty lucky having a second server with same content running in Canada.
Ordered a new one in Roubaix this time.
Unless Canada gets nuked in the next few days while i'm copying stuff, i'm safe...
Meanwhile routed all europeans on holiday to Canada.

Luckily, we just had a single storage server there, our main server is under the protective wings of MojoHost <3 :) :pimp

If I get it right we only have to wait until there will be a replacement server around mid March, right?
