I like Blender, but I've used 3ds Max since v5.5, so things are a little different for me

That is pretty cool. When I was a kid. I wanted to draw Voltron Lions and monsters. Never had the ability. Now, With Blender, Maybe I can.

Try them all out and see which is best for you. I've used POV-Ray, 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Zbrush (check this one out), Gmax, C4D, etc. They're all good for different things, and some work well together depending on what you're doing.
There are also like 1000 different ways to do the same thing in 3d, some ways are better than others, just practice.
Best 2 things that I can advise is to 1) Keep things simple and don't add too much detail too soon, especially if you're doing any kind of rigging, and 2) Pay attention to scale/units.

I use Blender and Unreal together to do lots of cools things with video and virtual production. The company I work for built me a small little studio. I don't have an LED volume, but I can do a lot of the same stuff they do on The Mandalorian with green screens and walls. The latest project I completed for State Farm came out, for lack of a better word, looking unreal.

Yeah I need to get back into Unreal, it's looking really good these days. I haven't touched it since V2 :(

I dove head first into the Virtual Production end of things. There, it's pretty much already the standard.

The fact that Blender and Unreal are both free to use is almost as impressive a feature as all they're both capable of. My daughter models and animates in Blender. My son is making games and VR lessons in Unreal. That sort of accessibility will give them a massive leg up as the younger kids start their adventures, for free, with professional level tools and likely stick with them.

Nice. I'm lazy and will make a model, sometimes rig it, then just sell it on Turbosquid. I made good extra money in high school doing that.

The best free 3d modeling program I've used back in the day was Gmax, everything else you had to get a keygen.... :upsidedow

In high school I had a "free 3D wallpaper" website. I had some friends that were big into Bryce. They would build a scene, then take a nice picture of it that could be used as desktop wallpaper, I would buy it and give it away for free on the website. Made money from ads. Did really well. This was back in the about.com and Ditto days when they were paying per click.

Anyway, was curious about Bryce a few months back and it seems like it's no longer a thing. Did they disappear or transform into one of the other products listed above?

Man, I forgot about Bryce. But, Daz (They bought Bryce from Corel) is a content company, not really the software like other 3d software, and I think it just kinda died. Something about Poser, too, but it's been so long.

Ah yes, they had Poser as well and I remember them spending all of the money I paid them on texture packs.

I think they removed textures from 2 characters, or the two characters all together, because the textures had shadows lol.

I remember using a lot of general texture packs from 3d Total back in the day. Sometimes Evermotion.

Just copied what a guy was doing on youtube. Procedural created planet.
I think a year ago, I wouldn't have been able to follow along, so I am learning.

I was going to recommend a juicer but I guess that doesn't really apply here.

I use Maya. Here are a few 3d Models I've done: Nasa Saturn 5 Launch Tower, Halo 5 grenade launcher, and b64 armored car

I prefer using Maya to animate as well. I use photoshop and Substance Painter to texture.

mattz 01-03-2022 07:03 AM

I use ZBrush for characters, this one was textured with substance painter

Here is a game asset I did in Maya along with my reference image. Textured in photoshop / substance painter

Deck of the Saturn 5 launch tower:

This project was for Nasa so it had to be almost perfect.

mattz 01-03-2022 07:15 AM

That tower took me 2 weeks and over 100 hours total.

Sure, if you ever need any help / 3d modeling pointers hit me up! I graduated from DAVE School in the backlot of Universal Studios.

Also, Blender is a great tool and I have a lot of friends that use it. I was just trained in a different program.

candyflip 01-03-2022 04:23 PM

Blender 3 is out and my kids have been learning to model. It's really amazing that we've got tools like Blender, Unreal and Davinci Resolve available to for people to use for not upfront, out of pocket costs.
