"Don't Look Up" Netflix - The Metaphor - Spoliers

"Don't Look Up" on Netflix is the story of Astronomers discovering that a comet is going to hit the earth. The politicians drag their feet (right wing Trump types). A rich technology guy wants to break the comet up and mine the comet. Nobody listens to the science guys, nobody wants a peer review.

This is a metaphor for climate change. We see the climate change happening but nothing is being done. This is my opinion, but I believe the comet represents "Proof Of Work" crypto coins. The technology guy (CEO of Bash phones) is a cross between Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, pushing proof of work crypto to destroy the planet.

Yes, Hydro and renewable energy is being used for a portion of mining. But this does not account for the massive amount of graphics cards being sold on the retail market.

Great movie. Don't use Proof Of Work Crypto.

My opinion is that Pinguins can fly.

They can though?

It has nothing to do with climate change, the actors, writers and directors have all stated its about how corporate greed will fuck the planet.

Nope, its mainly about climate change :)

Please note that it was written before the pandemics (and shot during it), but the whole point of the movie nicely fits for the covid thing as well :)

MaDalton 01-02-2022 01:15 PM

it's an awesome movie, Idiocracy 2.0 but more realistic since it's happening just like that right in front of our eyes.

lezinterracial 01-02-2022 02:06 PM

I think it was an ok movie. Many big names. yes, about climate change. But crypto? Which crypto you pumping?

grzepa 01-02-2022 02:12 PM

I loved it. Im glad i didnt read the imdb score or anything about it before watching it.
IMO deserves much more than the 7 something on imdb.

CaptainHowdy 01-02-2022 02:41 PM

That's quite a stretch to be honest. Interestingly, I interpreted the government as left wing types in that movie...

lock 01-03-2022 03:58 AM

I found it boring and didn't really like it at all.

LetterTwenty7 01-03-2022 04:52 AM

I felt like watching a short summary of today's society. Nice movie, 8/10.

yuu.design 01-03-2022 06:44 AM

Just saw it and loved the humor on this movie, anyway, I was thinking more about COVID than climate change

I have absolutely zero idea how you would come to that conclusion

Well, I suppose the answer is that everyone will see the (completely useless) government in that movie as the opposite of what they would support, because everyone thinks their views are the correct ones.

You viewed them as right wing, most likely because you saw they were useless and ineffective, unwilling to listen to science, and caring only about the next election. I saw them as left-wing, for the very same reason that you saw them as right-wing.

I suppose this suggests that the government in the movie was meant to just portray "the government" and not any specific party or side.

I didn't like the level of comedy - less would be better. But I liked how consequent the movie was ending and delivered a good unconfromy feeling. Overall I liked it.

You can tell there's something seriously amiss with Mr. Jack Dorsey just by looking at it

The thing about the left to me is feeling trumps science. I'm wondering when they're gonna tear down all the statues of Isic Newton and burn them too

Human life has much value, I have the correct view. The left seems to value feelings more than science and it wouldn't surprise me if they pulled down sir Isaac Newton's statue Because physics and astronomy are racist and put up a statue of meryle streep or pat Oswald

To be fair, the president in the movie is mostly a caricature of Trump.

In the movie, Meryl Streep plays a president who:
a) Used to be a former television star that went into politics
b) is vocally outspoken in her anti-intellectualism and anti-science ignorance
c) abuses cronyism
d) abuses nepotism

I could go on, but I think you get the point. There are SOME elements of other presidents in the character, like the track-suits that Hilary Clinton used to wear, but the bulk of the character is based off of Trump.

Wasn't that done in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" ? ?

Lefites in the US don't see themselves that way. They project their horrible behavior and attitudes onto the Right and hate them for it, when they should really just hate themselves. :winkwink:

TheLegacy 01-06-2022 12:35 PM

Well you got me to watch it and although there was a little to much comedy I felt that most roles were played out pretty well. Mind you it still would baffle me that a sitting president would call off something when it's already started (not going to ruin it)

I think the only honest part in the whole movie was them sitting down for the meal at the end - that was spot on.

Overall it was pretty good and worth the watch just to have some great debates afterwards which I think was the point of the whole movie.
