DOCTOR Who’s New Year’s Day special had the BBC show’s worst ratings since it was rebooted 17 years

So Dr Who is going down the toilet for those who care about the TimeLord. Some say it's because they moved to a female doctor - others blame poor writing while others have reasons beyond that. Now they're moving into a story line where the female companion is falling in love with the female doctor so now it's a love story.... pretty lame and out of character considering previous Doctors and their love interests.

Now there is rumor that they plan on having the new doctor as actor Omari Douglas (google him) who again - I think is like Jodie - playing up to special interest groups.

Anyone here watch Dr Who or have we given up on it entirely with the rest as slowly no one is watching the show at all?

DOCTOR Who’s New Year’s Day special had the BBC show’s worst ratings since it was rebooted 17 years ago.

Despite Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord clashing with the Daleks once more, only 3.4million tuned in.

In contrast, almost nine million watched her first full outing in the Tardis in 2018.

Jodie, 39 — the first woman to play the Doctor — has seen viewing figures gradually slide in the four years since she took on the role.

The latest figure is for those who watched live on the day. Final ratings, including viewers on catch-up or recordings, will be released next week.

A TV insider said: “Jodie’s legacy is leaving behind viewing figures that are among the worst in the show’s long history.

“Although far more people watch programmes on catch-up, this still doesn’t make up for the decline in viewers since 2018.

“Plus, the BBC always saw Doctor Who as the kind of show that was ‘event TV’, bringing the whole family together at the same time.

That happens when you deviate too much from main course. Before was same already with turning master into mistress, and you would think they would get a hint with that but no.

There is a saying in Hollywood screen time is expensive. Think about how much per minute it costs to make a 200 minute 100 million dollar film.(you do the math).

So it always comes down to a choice between storyline and dialog to create something interesting that moves forward and pays off. Or you can insert political messages. There's no time in a film for both.

And the other thing is is top notch high quality screen writers are not gonna mess around with amateur hour. And spending a 100 million dollars to make a PSA is definitely amature hour.

Dr Who used to be a fun escape into different universes, on different planets, with interesting 'monsters' as baddies...

Light hearted, kooky, science fiction fun, and nothing wrong with that. The Dr regenerated (as he does) and changed casting, then the female Dr turns up. Thats cool, no one cares really - No reason at all why the Dr shouldn't be female... Fits perfectly well with the shows 'Universe'...

But then we are no longer going in to space, no longer going to different planets, seeing different civilizations etc etc... No...

We are going back in time each episode to various 'Social points' in time, so we can have the message behind them rammed down our throats, to ensure we know how we are supposed to think.

We go to the 'Rosa Parks' on the bus time in history. But Rosa is scared to take a stand, so thankfully the new doctor gives her the courage, and we all learn 'Racism = Bad' - Or we go to the fall of the rajh in India, and again, the doctor has to help events play out as they did We learn 'Colonialism = Bad' etc etc etc...

Now there's nothing wrong with this as a premise for a kids show - Revisit periods in history, look at the people involved and their motivations, and explain why it was wrong, or bad, and why we should do that anymore etc... Nothing wrong with that all... But it's NOT 'Dr Who' !

Where are the different universes? The different planets? The different civilizations etc etc...

All Gone... No wonder we all stopped watching after the first few with the new female Doctor.

Yes there is also problem with repetitiveness - i think they should of be done with daleks after episode where they killed whole universe if you remember.

I had no idea this was the new format. I wouldn't watch this either.

The 'Stolen Earth' episode. No, I don't remember, I had to google, but it appears that Rose Tyler was in it then, so it's a fairly old one before the big change, but I don't really remember it. When it was on weekly, I did kinda keep track of what was happening in my subconscious, but since the lady appeared, I have really lost interest to the point that not only do I not bother to watch it anymore, but I've put most of the stories out of my head.

My TV box automatically recorded the last few episodes just recently - I deleted them without watching - Wanted the space for stuff I'm actually interested in these days :)

Exactly. This is the REAL reason why most long term viewers have simply stopped watching. We haven't complained, we haven't made a fuss - Just switched off / over

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_(Doctor_Who)

But of course we get constantly told that it's because we don't want a woman doctor, or we don't care about important issues or anything other that the reasons I gave above...

Now we are to have a gay blackman as the new doctor. I expect that if we don't all tune in and hail it the best show ever, then we are all racist and homophobic... :disgust

I'm just too old to argue these days - I'll just watch something else instead. :2 cents:

The Porn Nerd 01-06-2022 12:29 PM

Total garbage. Go woke, go broke.

BatMAN is not a girl (unless she is Batgirl)
SuperMAN is not a girl (unless its SuperGirl)
etc etc

Bye-bye Doctor Who until a WHITE MALE is cast as the Doctor again. Cast new stories with whatever race/sex/creed/color/orientation you want but leave the old stuff - Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc - alone please. I might like a female or gay black character zooming through time. Just not as Doctor Who.

Having flashbacks to the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot :Oh crap

newB 01-06-2022 06:25 PM

I watched it the next day on In Demand.

I think the decline can be mainly attributed to the writing. Look at the recent Flux story arc. What was the best part? The Weeping Angels. Why? Steven Moffat wrote those bits. What was the last really good, engaging episode before that? Twice Upon A Time. Why? Steven Moffat wrote that one, too.

I've been watching Who since the 70's and never did I ever have such a hard time keeping up with a story line as I did with the flux - it had a great premise but holy crap - was like weaving in and out of traffic.

There have been some good episodes and I truly watch in case one of the writers actually did have a bright idea. Jodie is a great actress but never given a clear shot at doing the job as the Doctor with the writers - and if the people guessing who the next Doctor is as being a gay black man - like wtf? What do we care? It's none of our business what someone does in their bedroom - just come up with a great story line please - visit other planets - other monsters and stop trying to assimilate us into a history of the world's ethics or social studies.

Ratings have to account for something - they tried reaching out to special interest groups and it failed - this is a family show - a sci-fi show - let it be that... and the ratings will be back. Doesn't matter what color or sex the Doctor is - just stop preaching to us and treat it as a sci-fi show please.

Franchises are suiciding Ghostbusters at least is trying to save itself. Dr Who wrecked itself.

Exactly. I dont care what sex, colour or orientation the next doctor is, provided he behaves as doctor who. As long as its about Dr Who themes and adventures, then that's fine - When or if it becomes all about their sex, colour or orientation, its no longer Dr Who anyway...

I liked the doctor who spin off I can't remember the name of it the one with the captain. That darn Welsh girl in that show is so beautiful to me lol

I think a lot of shows and movies are killing themselves by trying to shoe-horn in diversity to appease some "woke" people.

Sadly you're right - with all the various cultures out there pushing each other out of the way to be on top of the news - media and entertainment it is extremely difficult to just make something that a writer envisions. I hardly think any writer sits down thinking now how do I make a gay/lesbian black etc. sci-fi drama series?

People wonder why old TV shows are making such a huge return to the small screen

DC was trending the other day.

The DC movies have been bad enough as is.

It's like they want to lose money.

Dr Who should carry a rifle and Bowie knife. And bang at least 2 alien chicks per episode. But the chicks Dr Who bangs should be of different ethnicities. And maybe mention global warming every other episode. But real quick.

How about - "get in my Tardis bedroom, my groin is hotter than earth will be when the sun burns through the ozone layer due to global warming"

Or... "ewww not my type - she makes my dick fall harder than the trees in a South American rainforest... so a needless waste"

like that?

Yea little things like that. And maybe a full episode dealing with population control. Dr Who lands on world of bunny rabbit type people that reproduce at a high rate. Dr Who finds where a dam is going to explode, But he decides at the end when talking with some alien leaders that the dam needs to explode so the rabbit people don't starve to death. Needs of the whole outweigh the needs of the few.

Play very sad music at end when flooding. and then show life continuing on and rabbit people have enough to eat. Cue credits.
