Namecheap is SHIT

Just spent an hour with Putin's cousin.

they removed a card from payment and I did not renew a domain in time.

they don't take ownership of their errors, I used to recommend them now they can go fuck themselves

Who do you recommend for domains?

Namesilo or cloudflare

Way3 02-02-2022 10:45 AM

Over the past couple of years I have moved everything over to Namesilo!!! No regrets at all!!! :thumbsup

brassmonkey 02-02-2022 10:58 AM

If the card was valid you need to pursue the shit. i moved from there years ago

WiredGuy 02-02-2022 11:14 AM

Namecheap gives you up to 30 days after the domain has expired (their grace period) without any extra fees, or at least it was like that last time I forgot to renew in time.

Alternatively, Cloudflare has great pricing on domains.

Correct. Most places do, at least for the main TLDs, other TLDs may vary.

Additionally at most/all registrars there's a 30 day redemption period after the grace period where, assuming it hasn't been passed to an auction and sold, you can pay around $100 to recover the name. If it isn't worth that, it wasn't worth renewing anyway.

In addition to that Namecheap will email you 30 days before a name expires.

Then they email you 15 days before the name expires.

Then they email you 7 days before the name expires.

Then they email you 24 hours before the name expires.

Then the name expires and your site doesn't work any more.

If that isn't a big enough clue, they then email you for the fifth time a few days after it has expired.

I mean Namecheap is shit, for many reasons (and so is Namesilo), but people have take some responsibility.

If you're not reading your email and you don't notice your site is down for a month, then you couldn't have thought the name was that important to begin with.

hdbuilder 02-02-2022 01:30 PM

Namesilo is the best

ZENRA 02-02-2022 02:00 PM

This is why you always add funds to your account in case the card has issues.

+1 for namesilo

However, I have a bunch of .cam names at namecheap and have never had an issue.

In addition namecheap has their freedns which you can use even if the domain is regged somewhere else.

To avoid situations like this happening. Always have backups: money on account and if you suddenly forget, card to charge, and a third level as well if they offer it. It's an insurance policy against potentially losing your domain names and your business.

BlackCrayon 02-03-2022 02:25 PM

i like dynadot.com and porkbun.com. namecheap's control panel sucks.

Did you enable the Auto Renew feature using a credit card for payment?

AdultB2B 02-06-2022 08:42 PM

Agreed. I bailed a while ago. Went to Name Silo. More expensive but much less hassle.

Namecheap lists .com at 8.98. I'm currently paying 9.95 on Namesilo.

It's not a big difference. And it's worth it for the pain in the ass factor. Every dealing with them is horrendous.

Namesilo is pretty easy to deal with.

AdultB2B 02-07-2022 02:57 AM

Actually I just looked and I am paying 9.55 now. Again, not enough of a difference to worry about.

I stopped chasing the lowest cost solutions years ago.

Quality is much more important.

912lab 02-08-2022 02:35 AM

Well, I'm actually pretty happy with namecheap, I've also dealt with the support and they helped me quickly

So you’re the one.

As the op said, I agree they’re shit.

Looks like that is only registration price, while renewal price is considerably higher on namecheap.
This might have sense if you have a project which require registration of many new domains, otherwise dont see point to bother with it.

I'll be honest, if they were 3 or 4 bucks cheaper per domain I still wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Their customer service has gotten worse and worse. Their agents command of the English language is very limited. So any support request takes 5 or 6 emails back and forth.

In addition, when you login they send you a 2FA code. It usually never comes or comes an hour later. I tried to take off 2FA, but couldn't.

Oh and this is the worst part, when you try to send a support request about having issues logging in they ask you to login! I just gave up. Not worth the effort anymore.

There is a coupon for renewals (20% off)

ZTT 02-08-2022 03:42 AM

Even with the coupon they have higher renewals.

They have issues (not being cheap being one), but the complaint about support (and 2FA) is nonsense. They have live chat that responds immediately and they speak fine English.
