Suggested usage for a vertical 2nd monitor?

So, while I get my roof fixed, I'm getting a cheap temporary interim monitor to use with my windows box. It's a 1080p 24 inch monitor that also rotates to vertical.

Once I've got my roof repaired, it's gonna be redundant, so I'm thinking perhaps I might use it as a second monitor, in a vertical orientation, next my main curved 4K monitor... But what to use it for?

I know some people say they are good to code on, but I don't really code. Some people suggest using it to display discord on, but I don't really heavily use discord anyway... I've considered perhaps having Gmail open on it. That would be useful I suppose, but even that, still doesn't really jump out at me as really useful...

So what would YOU use it for?

I don't HAVE to use it of course. I could always keep it as a standby, or use it for vertical arcade games via MAME... Or even lay it flat and build a mini virtual pinball to mess about with... So it's not gonna go to waste, and it'll get me through the time where I cant use my large desk...

Yet I hope I'm not missing out on something really cool, that I just didn't think of... So... Over to you :)

I get the feeling most people get two monitors for general multitasking. It saves you time opening and closing or switching between applications in general.

dcortez 02-20-2022 11:37 AM

Multiple monitors are can be good for any time it is better to see more at the same time, than flip between windows.

Sometimes, I watch movies on my second monitor, while I'm working.

Yeah, I've got a big 4K widescreen on order. But won't be able to install and use it for a couple of months - Hence the smaller 'interim' monitor for the time being. Once I'm back at my desk, thats when Im looking for ways to use it...

J. Falcon 02-20-2022 04:18 PM

How about Skype or some other IM?

femdomdestiny 02-20-2022 05:41 PM

I am using it for messengers, keywords in excel tables, and for browsing sites. Once you get used to seeing much more at once than with horizontal monitors (need to scroll), it will be very hard to stop using it for as many things as you can.

A long time ago, I've rotated all three to play games. Very interesting.

The best one at the moment. So are there some modern pinball games in high resolution?

Probably. I don't even like pinball games.

Personally I would keep use that screen for Skype (or whatever other messenger you use). Or if you like reading articles, etc.

I like a 32 inch 4K. I need to pump the text up a bit, no big deal

Q: What is a good use of a vertical monitor apart from pinball?

A1: "Pinball!"

A2: "Oh yeah, good idea, pinball!"

A3: "Yes, that is the best suggestion so far, pinball!"

fuzebox 02-21-2022 10:57 AM

I mean web browsing is superior in a vertical orientation. I will never understand who fullscreen windows .

I used to have four monitors.... One for a main screen, one for email, one for skype, and one for my calander. Now I have a 49 inch curved monitor, Samsung. Love it.

I play that table in VR ! There's a full size rendering of that girl stood next to me, wriggling her ass and smiling, and a model train track surrounding me at waist height, with an old fashioned Steam Train chugging around the track. It blows out loads of smoke and toots its horn at me :)

EDIT: Found and added screenshot - Its that, but Im 'stood' right next to her infront the table :)

On what device?

CurrentlySober 02-21-2022 06:17 PM

A Reverb G2, via Steam on the PC.

Mind Blowing mate. I've even considered mocking up a couple of arcade buttons on a fake pinball front, so I can stand there and have my arms in the right place. Like how when you drive in VR and your wheel and pedals are there in real life too :)

Makes total sense. I mean most of the web is mobile orientated. Unless you have eyesight issues, you don't rotate your phone to read stuff in landscape. Its vertical based anyway. Like how you use a sheet of paper.

ZTT 02-22-2022 04:28 AM

Final sentence gives the solution. Write a book!

This looks so interesting. I will have to review VR sets and order some

Simple - You want the cheapest, out the box solution, but with more cartoony visuals, and lower PC based performance? Quest 2

You want the best visuals possible, with fantastic PC Graphics and decent tracking, with a mid range cost? Then get the the G2.

Best overall experience, the Vive Index, but it's not as good a visuals as the G2, (lower resolution) And you'll also need to set up base stations to track yourself - Meaning you can't do it in a different place should you choose. Plus its the most expensive and is about 4 years old now...

G2 is the current best allrounder by far. I did MEGA research summer before last when I chose my G2, and really nothing much has changed since, in the VR space.

My cousin convinced me yesterday to order an Oculus Quest 2... is that any good? I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Yeah. Its a great all rounder. You can do plenty of its 'own games' (ones that are built into its eco system. You can also link it to the PC and use steam for AAA titles too. Only thing is though, that as soon as you REALLY get into it, you'll probably wanna upgrade.

dcortez 02-22-2022 10:52 PM

I just figured out what you meant by "vertical monitor". :)

It may be time to retire. I thought the second monitor was mounted "vertically", above the first monitor. My bad...

That's what happens when your first (IBM) PC monitor was a Sony Trinitron TV.

So, yes to pinball!

CurrentlySober 02-23-2022 02:04 PM

Just thought I'd drop this here. Uploaded today, its basically agreeing with my choice of the G2 as being the best allrounder. He compares it to the newest top end headset that costs over $2000 more than the G2...

Or just goto https://www.arcadepunks.com/ and download free images premade from there? I like the coinops packages for PC myself - They contain all the game roms and are pre configured with a front end. But they also do the same for Android and Pi 3s and 4s...
