Amazed that its taken them this long to figure out that people don't want to watch that stuff. I can't bring myself to watch 95% of the series or movies that Netflix produces. I bought an HBOMAX subscription and have barely turned on Netflix for weeks.

CurrentlySober 05-22-2022 06:55 AM

Yeah, I'm pretty much over the 'woke'

I know they have woke shit on it too but there's a lot of other stuff and movies that HBO made in the past. We also get alot less movies on netflix then the US does due to licensing. I can usually turn on netflix, browse for 20 minutes and not find anything I'd be interested in watching.

HBO is my go to, pretty much everything is worth watching even if not my taste. The new CEO has already started slicing, too.

I got a whack of the new stock in the AT&T split so yes everyone please get HBO!

Are you seriously labeling We Own This City as woke?

I might have misunderstood. I haven't watched We Own This City, and I thought you were writing in the context of "HBO is full of woke shit too" and not as an actual recommendation. I understand now you meant that I should ACTUALLY watch it :1orglaugh

J. Falcon 05-22-2022 09:27 AM

Huh?

I guess it could be considered "woke" if you find topics like massive police corruption and police brutality against minorities "woke"

It's based on a non-fiction novel and created by David Simon, who created The Wire.

grzepa 05-22-2022 09:31 AM

being woke is one thing, but midget black trans rights is another thing. It was just too much of this crap @ Netflix

Police corruption no, but if the entire focus of the show is on police brutality against minorities then yeah I would consider that to be woke. If that's part of it or it just happens in the show but the whole thing doesn't completely revolve around it, then no.

The entire focus is NOT on brutality, as that would make for an altogether different type of program.

But police corruption and brutality often go hand in hand. That said, the show does deal directly with brutality, especially the Freddy Gray murder by Baltimore police, and civil rights activists in that city. However, I'd say the "focus" of the show is on the fucked system of law enforcement in the US. Sort of like The Wire, in a way.

The focus of the show is exposing a massively corrupt police department with a morally bankrupt unit leader that would harass anyone and steal anything he could to make an extra dollar because he thought he was God.

You can be anti-woke and anti-corrupt fucks.

That's a really good description, yeah.

But those cops were also incredibly brutal, especially Daniel Herslm who would wail on anyone (mostly blacks) and get away with it. Only to be shielded by a corrupt police department. It was only unit leader who was corrupt, but the entire system.

That guy definitely was.

The story seems to be: most cops did not want to do any real work due to the riots, legal issues and risks. The cops that did work were psychopaths that did horrid shit but they were the only ones putting up numbers so they were given miles of rope.

Jenkins, too. Did you see him beat the shit out of that guy having a drink on his stoop? Those cops (white and black) are incredibly racist. As well as all-out thieves who would rob anything that wasn't tied down.

In all honesty, it's a really bleak and depressing show. Even more so than The Wire. At least those fuckers all got locked up.

Jenkins went bat shit at some point. His TO turned him, but then Jenkins went all out. The night at the strip club... who would do that?

Do you watch Bosch on Amazon Prime? I thought it was completely done, then a few weeks back saw a commercial for Legacy and was stoked. It's almost done, one more week I think. Really great show. Tempted to read the books, not really a fiction reader.

Never heard of it. I'll check it out, thanks.

I recommend "The Offer" on Paramount+

Looks interesting. I'll try to check it out, I don't have Paramount+ and the only other TV show I would want would be Yellowstone.

I was just telling my dad the other day, everyone wanted to "cut the cord" and now we are back to needing a dozen different services, at a higher price, to get the programming we want. AND it's a pain in the butt flipping through all of them to find something decent.

Rochard 05-22-2022 04:39 PM

This has nothing to with being "woke". Netflix was in the right place at the right time; They were the first to make a serious attempt at online streaming. Now there are so many other companies.... HBO, Disney, Amazon Prime, Apple, IMDB, Peacock....

Sly said it best.... We are now to the point where we are needing a dozen different services...

I was paying for Hulu, Disney, HBO, and Netflix. I noticed I hadn't logged into HBO and Disney for the past three months so... I dropped them.

The music industry went through the same thing... You could only get certain artists on certain platforms. Now I use Amazon Music and I can stream anything. Eventually the entertainment industry will get here too.... People aren't going to be interested in paying to watch their favorite TV show on a specific platform. They might... I like "For All Mankind" on Apple and season three is coming out and... I'll wait until the season is done, buy in for a month, watch it, and that's it.

I don't use it, but I like the Amazon model where you can add the different streaming services basically as "plug-ins." I think Apple TV has this feature as well.

One centralized service/platform that offered that as an easy to use package where you can upgrade and downgrade quickly, plus easily search all services for what you want, is likely where we are headed.

I'm probably moderately liberal by most standards, but most of the shit Netflix has put out in the past 2-3 years has been hot garbage.

I'll personally never understand any large business spending a lot of time catering to the 5-10% on anything, whether it's the "woke" types, or the far-right types. Sounds like a good way to alienate most of your customers.
