Youtube removed dislikes - your thoughts
 

As many of you would have noticed, youtube stopped showing the dislike count for videos, a controversial decision to say the least. What do you think about it?

I know a lot of us used that like/dislike ratio. For example if a video had lots of dislikes to likes, you generally knew it was going to be shit. It was a bit helpful to have that user feedback data.

Anyhow, not sure if anybody else does this weird ass shit, but from the beginning I've been looking at it another way to gauge user feedback. I compare likes to views, and get a basic % of how many people who saw the video liked it. (I don't use calculators and shit i'm just talking about glancing and getting rough idea)

What I'm seeing: 1% likes to views is good.... not mind blowing but good. This is a baseline level. Anything below that 1% starts to get questionable.

Most videos that I watch and find decent are around 1%.


Here's some random examples just looking on youtube now:

snoop dogg - gin and juice 1.25%
johnny depp wins case video - 1.7%
live rescue: helping a veteran - 1.9%
amber heard court testimony vids - 0.2% - 0.6% range
clickbaity bullshit videos - 0.2%-0.4%


Not sure why I'm such a dork even thinking like this, but have found it to be a surprisingly good alternative to the missing dislike button lol... really does give you an interesting gauge.

Takes power away from the users. YT said they did it to prevent "dislike bombing" but that sounds like bullshit. Makes the LIKE function practically pointless.

Youtube has a TON of bots more than twitter bots I would say.

Also, I feel like since they took away the dislike numbers people hit the like less often.

The rumor has it that there was a disproportionate ratio like/dislike between white youtubers who generally gather a larger following and substantially more likes in comparison to ”people of color”. Someone must have gotten their feelings hurt…

I preferred having it, as it is another useful stat for assessing videos before watching. I guess they had their reasons though, although I haven't had time to find out what they were.

Those sort of tools show be available to verified accounts only

Totally agree, especially for how-to videos. I'd like to know if 95% of the people who tried that DIY technique burned off their eyebrows.

I read the comments for that stuff, it's 1000% more informative than likes/dislikes.
I hit dislike if the mofo talks too much.

They removed the dislikes because many larger corporations (news and others etc...) were getting tons of dislikes since most news outlets suck, and so it was to appease these larger entities.

YT's excuse was BS as they're not going to really tell you why.

If ever you get a letter in the mail from any company you do business with and it starts out as, "In order to serve you better ...." then you know it's the exact opposite.

Personally I think this is shit. For example before it was easy to see that this video is scam for example, if 100 likes and 10000 dislikes, and now it's hard.

All the video is a scam because you got them through recommendation.
It's rigged by an algorithm that never watched the video.

What pisses me off more though is the is the recommendations that ask me to rate them. Like what the fuck, how can I rate it just from thumbnail and title?

Terrible idea by YouTube. I always give likes, unless the video really deserves a dislike. That's what dislikes are for. Some videos are just begging for thumbs down.

One thing is clear, nobody is in favor of this retarded update on youtube. And nobody (other then me) is running calculations to gauge if videos are shit/not worth the time lol.

Nothing to think about that can't be censored so never to be a negative comment on failures of left or on corporation.

It's still there, they just just removed the javascript output. There are a number of extensions that make it viewable again.

Dislikes is usually a good metric to see if a video is shit or not.

TBF I think generally across the whole of the web, the like/dislike thing is early 2000s and should have been dropped a long time ago. There is so much content to consume that it's impossible to see it all.
