So what does this mean for us adult webmasters? We have to pay a coder to implement this into our sites, or we get blocked by California? Californian population is 11% of the US, and wealthier than most (?). So I assume this might cost at least 15% of US sales?

In about 6 months or less, they will probably have to admit it failed as I bet everyone uses some sort of VPN.

Ideally it will fail, or other countries will adopt the law.

What you say is not a joke, as such systems often need nothing more than to hold a pic up (say on a magazine) and you can trick it.

How long before they get sued by someone who is 20 but has a young face, and is not allowed to access a site.

For some higher risk use cases, the age check may involve a liveness test where the user must take several selfie photos or record a short video saying phrases requested by the provider. Passive liveness technology has further reduced the effort required by the user – do look into that.
No one is going to do a vid.

Also, what if your using a pc with no webcam?

Its just bull from people who presume xy and z will work. Probably because some age verification firm who wants to make millions has told them it will work no problem.

First, would you?

Lets put it this way, suppose some official does a test and finds your ai did not pick up someone was 17 and not 18, and let them access the site. Could that mean a huge fine or prison for you?

And would the cost be far more than the sales you loose?

The option is probably to find a third party firm, but would they do it free? Probably not. Also could you trust them? They could easily data collect the information and sell it on to your competition.

Not to mention, your presuming people (your customers) will do this. One suspects 99% of people will not.

Also why have we not seen this magic AI before? I mean other firms who asked you for a facescan often take days or weeks to look at the pics.

But this is going to be gold to those who want to blackmail people. Set up a bogus site, ask people to do a face scan. Now you have there pic of the trying to access porn. Pay me $10k or your boss and wife will be informed.

I'm waiting for the next step in age verification, where you have to upload a HD video of yourself, standing at your mother's grave, clutching a stack of bibles and stating in a loud clear voice 'Momma, oh Momma, I SWEAR I am old enough to join an adult site'

Might sound silly, but mark my words, it'll happen one day... :2 cents:

The writers at YNOT have been discussing this all week. One of them posted an article about it today in fact:
