New 256-Foot Superyacht Concept Doubles as a Fully Functional Submarine

If you’re fortunate enough to own a superyacht, chances are you want to show it off. But for at least one yacht designer, the greatest luxury a boat can offer may be the ability to disappear.

Witness the new superyacht concept dreamed up by naval architect Elena Nappi. Dubbed the Carapace, the hybrid vessel is engineered to cruise the high seas both above and below the water: The 256-foot boat doubles as a fully functional submarine capable of diving to depths of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time.

Even if this was your run-of-the-mill traditional superyacht, the Carapace would stand out, thanks to a breathtaking tech-meets-organic aesthetic with flowing curves that travel from bow to stern. Like many of its peers, the yacht features several beautiful on-deck entertainment areas, including a beach club complete with a pool. But what really makes Nappi’s boat so unique is its light aluminum superstructure, which can be completely sealed up so that it can operate underwater. The designer believes this capability will offer travelers a truly private getaway. It could also appeal to power brokers who might need an added level of secrecy for important meetings.

“The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers in the field of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future,” Nappi told CNN. “Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the superyacht market.”

I think the fact that it could turn into a submarine is amazing - obviously drug dealers wanting to move a lot of drugs could take advantage of this LOL

Anyone else noticed how different the nose is on the submarine rendering? If they ever did build something like this, it won't be able to submerge more than just a few feet. The water pressure would crush the haul like cardboard.

Helpful if folks are trying to confiscate your yacht

Christmas isn't that far away - I'm difficult to buy for so if you are looking for ideas!..

Well it is quoted as saying, "The 256-foot boat doubles as a fully functional submarine capable of diving to depths of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time."

so putting that into perspective 985 feet

It's about four-and-a-half times as wide as The Wingspan of a 747
It's about five times as tall as The Cinderella Castle
It's about five-and-a-half times as tall as The Leaning Tower of Pisa
It's about eleven times as long as Baseball base distances
It's about one-tenth as long as The Beast (Roller Coaster)

.

Sir Philip Greens Lion Heart super yacht is crazy.

His book is very revealing - I'm reading it right now, called Damaged Goods by Oliver Shah.

if you look at the image of the ship on water, itīs nose is actually under the water, the front end is the same, just half of the nose cannot be seen, zoom in... :thumbsup

Near the end of the article it reads

"The boat will offer solid performance specs as well. According to Nappi, Carapace will be powered by a diesel-electric and fuel cell system that gives it a range of 2,400 miles. This powertrain would allow the boat to reach a top speed of 16 knots on the surface and 12 knots below it."

Apparently the system they are using diesel-electric and fuel cell system is a clean and green system as seen in the article below. So not much damage if any to environment.

a little slow, but still, great to hear this yacht will be as green as it can be...

I had read, many private yacht owners are trying to change to a cleaner system, sadly costing millions on these big boats :thumbsup
