Streaming Wars did not learn from porn
One thing I noticed over the years was how many huge porn sites came and went, presumably as they burnt cash to be huge. Many would offer affiliates 100% of sales in order to get affiliates promoting them. Presumably they would have upsells inside promoting other paysites in a way to make a profit. Many seemed to employ lots of staff and purchase high budget porn. Then a few years later affiliates post how they have not been paid, then later the sites close. Netflix and others have burnt huge amounts of cash to get content, in the hope after a few years that membership would cover costs. It feels like many of these systems could have spent much less and purchased much less but purchased stuff people wanted to see. One problem is a lot of these systems have I suspect only a small amount people want to see. |
