This has been in the works and widely publicized as part of the proposed 'online harms bill' for several years now.
The last attempt failed, as far as I remember, largely because the UK government mandated designated age verification companies to provide the required verification, and those companies could not meet the EU privacy laws.
This time, the UK is no longer in the EU, and the UK government will just require adult sites to have age verification, without setting up any 'official' verification providers for them ready.
