Barclays Bank no longer processing foreign cheques

Email from Barclays:

Quote:

We’re withdrawing our foreign currency cheques and international drafts services
We wanted to let you know from 25 January 2024, you’ll no longer be able to deposit foreign cheques into your Barclays accounts or send cheques from foreign currency accounts. This also means both collection and negotiation options will no longer be available.

You won’t be able to request an international draft in our branches. Any future-dated international drafts will be cancelled after 25 January 2024 and you’ll need to use an alternative method of payment.

We’re making this change because most international payments are now electronic. Electronic payments are more convenient, quicker and secure than international cheques and drafts.

The decision to withdraw a service is never easy and we appreciate this may change how you make international payments. We’re here to help if you have any concerns about these changes.

How to receive money from abroad
To receive an electronic payment, the person paying you might ask for your SWIFT/BIC code and IBAN number:

• The SWIFT/BIC for Barclays UK is BUKBGB22

• Find your IBAN (International Bank Account Number) on the bank statement of the account you want to receive funds into

If you receive foreign cheques from the US Treasury, please contact them directly to discuss whether the payment can be sent electronically.
Twatting twats.

Bugger me - End of an era!

I opened a 2nd account with Lloyds when my local Barclays closed, just for the ability to cash foreign cheques. Now the local branch of Lloyds is closing end of year...

None of my banks in norway accept checks anymore either

I am with Barclays Bank and have not had this email.

While it is probably applies to all customers, it also may be they allow there (VIP customers (me) to keep paying in checks.

That said, I think most payments I get these days are Paxum and Paypal.

I do get the odd check, so it will be interesting next time I go.

To note I also have a business account with them, so they may treat that differently.

One suspects this may be because of pressure on banks to prevent criminal activities, and may deem non UK checks harder to trace.

In truth I could see UK banks also not accepting payments from Paxum at some point and possibly PayPal.

Checks weren't accepted in any bank in most of EU for like a decade.

I agree...

I tried pass a cheque like 10 years back here in Spain & was told, Sabadell doesn´t accept any more, and likewise for Natwest in the UK, they´re not just old, but obsolete :helpme

I do remember using business cheques back in the early 2000´s... but not since 2010 :2 cents:

I just had some bodywork done on a car and the guy requested a check. My response was: who even has checks anymore?!

I have turned off checks as any payment type for any of my accounts. Too much work when it's completely unnecessary. Storefronts and larger deals perhaps, digital world? Strong no.
