Why do people find the Exorcist scary?

It often makes me giggle.

Years ago when I was 18 one of the lads I worked with at the local cinema told me this film scared him.

At first I thought he was joking, then I put it down to him being a Christian.

But others over the years have said it scares them.

I do not understand why I find it funny and others scary.

Perhaps it is because women near me act like she does.

There's no way to figure you out or to explain why you think the way that you do, you're too fucked up. Just accept it as the way that it is and that's that.
You thinking that The Exorcist is funny isn't surprising, though..

At the time, this was scariest film every made. It has all of the tropes we find "usual" today but at the time it was pretty new. Dark lighting, creepy sounds, other-worldly events, and of course the religious core story. It was a vegitable soup of horror, and it worked.

Also don't forget all of the "subliminal" tricks in this movie. Extra sounds, 1 or 2 frames of death-masks, etc. The scene where the priest is dreaming and sees his mother coming out of the subway has the subliminal death-mask cut used and was apperently so scary at the time that some people seeing it in the theatre, fainted.

If you want to experience that for yourself, look for the original version of the movie. The Directors Cut "The Version you've never seen before" has all of the subliminal stuff hightened, so it is no longer subliminal. It's alot less scary and just kinda dumb.

When it first came out people were leaving the movie theatres and passing out and throwing up... they had ambulances on stand by outside the theatres.

You have to understand that when it was first released there was nothing like it previously. It was the first hardcore horror movie released basically. What did they have before that? Frankenstein?

True story - My Local cinema had a midnight screening of the Exorcist - At this point in time, it was actully a 'Banned Video' in the UK

I asked if it was the 'uncut' version, they told me yes, full version - that's the point - You cant get it on video, you can only see it at the cinema, and we can control who gets in to see it...

So yes, its the 'Uncut Version'

So I went in... Did I find it scary?

Fuck Knows...

I fell asleep after about 10 mins, cause it was so late and got woken up when it had finished by a cleaner!

Honestly, you didn't miss anything. If you love classic movies, you kind of need to see it because its classic. But if you want to see it for horror-level entertainment, it might not spook you.

Yeah, I've seen it since, and its definitely 'of its time'...

Fear of the unknown that has chance, albeit small, of being possible.

Likely because you have no feelings towards a devil or god so it's laughable. If you ever seen one in person you would feel differently and question what's around you.

The movie was meant for the time period as to what audiences could withstand. SAW for example would never be allowed on the screens. Sorry you can't appreciate classics

Be it demons, or an alien race, psychic attack, I can t rule these things out as impossible. I’ve seen some shit in my day and I’ve seen through shit, too. I’ve seen things I can’t explain, and done things I have no idea how I did it. There was a pile of playing cards at the end of a rave strewn across the floor. I could see the ace of spades eventhough it was face down. I told who I was with what I was going to do and picked it up. Sure enough, the ace of spades. I don’t discount anything anymore. So ya, I think we have “ports” into our minds that can be exploited, and playing around with it can be dangerous. Imo.

Some people laugh when they are nervous or afraid.
