I saw The Abyss in theatres when it came out and loved it. Lindsey's drowning scene freaked me the fuck out. I saw the special edition years later and liked it too, but at 3 hours long, I found the original cut to be better.

Cineplex in Montreal sucks. Any time movies get re-releaesd, US theatres show those movies and even have big events around them (Back to the Future, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, etc). Cineplex never bothers to do anything fun anymore. When "Event" movies were shown, they would always have a celebrity MC inroduce the movie, do some trivia and give away prizes, etc. Now, they do fuck-all. And since Cineplex is pretty much the only game in town, they have no competition and no reason to even try.

They do have competition though. Home viewing.

It's making less and less sense for many to go to the movies. I personally enjoy it as a way to get out and treat it as an experience, not just a movie, but when it's well over $60 for a family to go to a theater to watch a movie that they can see at home on the big screen for less than $5, the latter sounds like the better option.

The theater that I go to is an upscale one. Nice seats, blankets, good food, drinks, all that. Anytime I go there, it's pretty much empty. And I easily spend over $150 for 2 people.

I did read that Maverick was a huge boost to the movie industry after covid, and just in general, but with so many distractions today... it will be interesting to see if the movie theater industry can continue "as is." I don't think they can.
