It seems pointless opening a shop in the UK these days

Even if we ignore the fact people will probably rob your shop or shoplift and that female staff will take legal action because fore health and safety you need to make sure female staff can put on a uniform correctly and film them for safety reasons.

The rent and rates are nuts.

It is no wonder all the shops are so on are shutting down.

London apparently is dead these days.

Near me is a closed fish and chip restaurant. It was always busy. I thought about renting it as all the gear is there, so no real expense. Then I looked at what they wanted in rent. No wonder it has been closed a year.

Energy rates caused a lot of shops and bars to be closed, since a lot of business usually have same average income and they cant out of blue pay higher energy costs just like that.

This is true, but also wages have gone up, plus the rent and rates are huge.

Rent depending of landlord - those which are smart, will reduce it and rent place, those who will be arrogant and raise price they will never rent. As this situation also causing to have plenty of rent spaces.

How anyone can own a brick and mortar business is beyond my understanding. Everybody's looking to sue you and steal from you. Look at sleazy dreams bar fiasco. Everybody in high school should learn how corrupt the court system is they would never stick their necks out for anything. 100% of the work I need is done by remote workers and everything is on text email and recorded phone line. I absolutely never meet with them in private even if they're local.

This is the place:

https://www.facebook.com/catchseafoo.../?locale=en_GB

They had a few sites.

The one I am talking about is the Leeds one.

If you google fish and chip shops in Leeds (UK), you should see it listed on a few sites. Look for the catch one.

I think they wanted over 34k a month, while most places want 31k.

It used to be Brians fish and chips for years and years.

If I went past it always had lots of customers.

These places used to be a gold mine.

When I was at college in Morley a girl's mum had one, and it was not even that good. But her mum got her anything she wanted.

Not far from me is another popular fish and chips restaurant.

It was near where my nan lived.

It was famous for a UK television presenter used to go as he lived near by in the park in some fancy flats. his name was Jimmy Savile. He always made a fuss of us kids. I bet not many famous TV people do that.

He would also go to the wooden cafe at the park that overlooks the big pond.

He used to jog around the park and would always wave.

DVTimes 12-13-2023 11:35 AM

This is the one I would see Jimmy Savile at.

It seems to suggest this one is closed.

I will have to drive past as if they have closed then things are very bad as they were very popular.

in our country, landlords can write off empty space from taxes, so they have all the time to find the next fool trying to make it. seems to have more value to them to keep it empty and probably obtain a better price when selling...probably the same in london

Does the UK have the same problem as the US where they've made it practically legal to steal anything under $950? Many shitholes here have made it a civil infraction akin to a parking ticket if you steal under $950... which, surprise surprise, the usuals are robbing stores so much many chains are closing locations in these particular shitholes.

It's getting that way. Police won't bother attending many shoplifting incidences so stores have to employ security on the door in many places. Which obviously the smaller corner shops can't afford to do so it's a free for all. But post a humorous pic of your dog wearing a swastika on social media and the police seem to have all the resources to come and break your door down and arresting you for hate crime.

Dont know for UK but my country have limit on around 150$. But yes this is common problem in many countries , for example in CZ there is a gang which scam tourists by giving expired belarus rubles instead actual money, and despite they being reported on police hundred times, they still operate freely because they exploit that limit.

A while ago, I rented out a space in my building to a Chinese restaurant for $1200/month, and that was low. $4k seems about right depending on what it is.

31k/month is too much, though, lol.
