Used car prices have gone completely insane

Cars that should be $500 for a 16 year old working at McDonald's part time to buy are over 10 times more than what they should cost.

Pre-COVID and during COVID, you could still find cars for sub $1000 that would be reliable commuters and even some cool project cars. I bought a couple of Integras during this time and had a ton of fun with them. A drunk driver crashed into my 89 Integra 5 speed, RIP silver 'teg... (Fun car, incredibly smooth motor.)

Post-COVID, the car market has lost its fucking mind. I even worked with a guy trying to sell an utterly clapped out, rustbucket 1988 5.0 Mustang notchback for $12,000 with a transmission that barely shifts and rust from driving it in winter on every fender. "I know what I got" attitudes on every single shitebucket people are trying to sell to people.

From what I can tell, high-end cars haven't really gone up in price much, mid-range cars are holding their value better, but the low-end cars? Seems like that entire market of shitbox beaters has been nearly eliminated. As a fan of shitbox beaters that keep running with 0 money put into them, it is shocking to me to see the inflation hit the beater market.

Although, I am now seeing even more opportunity to find broken $500 cars, fix them for cheap, and then put them up for sale for $5,000 since there are practically no beaters left for young and/or poor people to buy anymore!

Although, I notice the price change with everything since covid.

The price of a new car goes up & the price of used cars will also rise...

i must say, fuck me! $7k for a 1990 honda lol!

maybe drives itself? :)

DVTimes 12-13-2023 12:59 PM

Car prices are crashing in the UK.

I'm 45 and I look at the current times and think, wow... it must fucking absolutely suck shit to be an 18 year old man in 2023... clearly I'm fairly clueless as to what lives they actually live at 18 years old these days, but from the outside as a 45 year old man who had the FUCKING BEST TIME from like 18-35, being young in 2023 looks like it must suck!!!

If you think the cars are expensive...

Young guys can't even move out of their parent's bedroom because the rents are also extremely insane. How can a young man afford a place where he can throw a party? Have people over?

I used to get laid alll the time before I met my baby momma because I had 1000+ sq ft in downtown Vancouver for $1700 a month, about 10 years ago.

Now, a young man would pay $1850 for 300 sq ft in a building full of Karens that would complain the moment a single bass thump could be heard at 8 PM on a Friday night. Feels like this time young people won't even have bush parties to go to because nobody will be able to afford the cars or gas to get out to them!

Just thinking of what kind of opportunities that super high rent and super high car prices cause... damn I wish I sold hardcore drugs, I think that is probably the #1 biggest booming market :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Really?

Any thoughts as to why? I've heard you guys have more road taxes and much more expensive gas, along with a VASTLY superior train/underground network.

Tasty1 12-13-2023 01:11 PM

A Honda Civic from 1990! That is a classic Car!
It is a miracle it still drives and the metal isn't all gone.

Acepimp 12-13-2023 02:01 PM

I bought a 2001 Outback for $400 in 2020, fixed it up and sold it earlier this year for $3600. It should've been worth about $2K :2 cents:

One reason is they have air zones in some cities, so you get charged if you drive with an old car, so people no longer want them.

Yeah, I almost bought a car like this for my commute in 2020-2021ish and it was 1500 in similar shape, automatic, with similar mileage.

Automatic 25 year old Integras selling for nearly 10k? Bwahahaha... basically if you can take broken $500 cars, fix them, you can sell them for like 3-4k+ now I bet. Just have to jump on the deals on broken cars when you find them.

Ah! Makes sense. Here all of the older cars that are easy to fix and easy to find parts for are soaring in value like fucking insane here in Canada.

>conspiracy hat on<

The powers that be don't want people driving cheap, easy to fix gas cars. The powers that be want everyone in very expensive battery-powered cars that can be turned off remotely and be easily tracked.

fuzebox 12-13-2023 02:51 PM

To be fair a lot of cars you listed as "shitboxes" have reached collector status in the enthusiast market. A 1990 civic hatch today is basically a 68 mustang in 2001. There was a bottoming out in the 2000s but a lot of cars from say 85-2010 just will not lose value if they run and drive.

New and used car market still flying high from covid supply chain bullshit, but hyper inflation is a bigger issue, you can't compare a dollar amount today to 2019 let alone 2010 or 2000. Regardless of the inflation percentage the government publishes, that money buys you way less. Remember when a new Xbox was like $199?

According to the internet calculator $1700 in 2013 is $2240 today.

SkynetHosting 12-13-2023 02:52 PM

Anyway, gentlemen, life is becoming increasingly expensive. It's not just about cars or rents anymore; almost every aspect of life is becoming more costly, and it seems to be getting even more so.

Back in 2020 you could search Craigslist and there would be pages and pages of cars under $2,000.... now? Jack shit!

Found the cheapest Honda Civic in Vancouver.... need to buy this, put on a fart tip, and start posting on Revscene again... :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

This is why when I need to go somewhere, I just steal a car, and abandon it at my destination.

Because you are only doing a one way journey, you are not in the car for long, so its a very low chance of getting caught.

This is how I got to my dentist earlier today. When I came out, I simply stole a different car, then left it on a neighbours driveway when I got home...

Simples & cheap... :2 cents:

For me... It seems like the prices of cars are coming down. Or maybe I have more disposable income.

I buy all used cars. I will never buy a new car again. You loose way too much money. Last month I bought a new (to me) Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was great. I bought it through Carvana, got exactly what I wanted, all the options I wanted, and they delivered to my house.

I also bought a used Jaguar last week... X Type. Laugh if you want but tit was the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

Yeah when I was young a house was 150k only 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver... average shitty job paid like $15 an hour

Now the same house is 1.5 million and the average shitty job pays like $25 an hour...

God a few of those early Lightspeed Cash cheques were sooooo nice... got listed on Pinklist or whatever that pink mgp site was early in the 00's and made so much money off a Jordan Capri video... tied for 2nd place of all time highest paid single gallery listings with a Gorilla Gras video and under the #1.... an Ass Parade single gallery that made over $5000 in a few days from a single Xvideo sticky... and the video had no nudity! It was just a giant fat assed brown woman walking through a 3rd world street / market with her gigantic ass bouncing everywhere.

I've always wanted an XJ6 or 12 to convert to a modern V8!

I owned a mint 1986 XJ6, white with blue interior, but I couldn't find a place to work on it. Sold it for twice what I paid for it. Love Jaguars!
