Global Economic Collapse: Will It Affect Porn?

Financial disaster is hitting the world today (Monday August 5th,2024) as indexes around the globe see their biggest declines in over 20+ years. Wall Street is in panic, blaming the Fed for dragging its' feet on reducing interest rates in a futile effort to stem inflation. The Dow Jones is down over 1100 points, S&P down 3%, NASDAQ tanking, Japan and European markets crashing....

Are er officially in a recession now? But more importantly to us pornographers: how will this economic upheaval affect our businesses?

This year has already seen drastic changes in the Adult Industry, including but not limited to new Visa rules, Google AI updates fucking with SERPs and Age Verification laws going into affect in several US States. And now this??

This summer was already adding up to be one of the worst in recent memory in terms of sales/revenue (July especially) and the late summer rebound many of us were hoping for seems a dream on a day like this one.

What do you think the rest of 2024 holds for the porn biz and what are you doing (if anything) to prepare yourself and your business for a possible economic collapse? Adult has always been 'recession proof' but I'm thinking this one will be a real test of that theory.

What say you? :helpme

If airfares and the COLA will drop. then bring it on.

There's a war on humanity's happiness. Semper fi.

The floating world has always been here. Sex will always sell.

A bunch of rich people lost money. Are they the ones buying the bulk of adult products?

:2 cents:

VikingMan 08-05-2024 03:05 PM

I plan on sustaining myself with squirrel meat. Even precious metals were down today.

gx60 08-05-2024 05:47 PM

Interest rate cuts would fix the summer sales slump you mentioned.

Yup, but I guess street hookers will down their rates. :stoned

pornlaw 08-05-2024 10:10 PM

Ive seen a decline everywhere.

Most of my clients' sales are down significantly - programs and even OF models

And yes, escorts rates are down. I follow a lot of them on X and many are starting to complain about guys not wanting to pay their rates and some are even leaving the business.

OF models are leaving in droves.

Liquor sales are down.

Inflation is up.

So while someone's 401K or Roth being killed doesnt mean they wont buy porn - but its the economy stupid. The less liquidity in the world the less people have to spend on vices like hookers, scotch or porn.

erotismo 08-08-2024 08:44 PM

All affiliate sales seem to be down..... or the skimming is up like hell

Very True!

If there is a real economic collapse, bye bye porn! People will spend their time and energy to try to save or maintain a decent standard of living.

sarettah 08-10-2024 07:01 AM

it appears that your global economic collapse was a tad pre-mature, perhaps?

Higher trading on Friday capped a major comeback on Wall Street as late-stage gains largely wiped away Monday's heavy losses, ending a turbulent week with a high note. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose close to 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) increased 0.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) gained 0.1% or about 50 points.

Markets closed the most volatile week of the 2024 campaign. Monday saw the worst rout of the year, and Wall Street's "fear gauge," the CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX), soared to its highest levels since the throes of the pandemic.

By Thursday, a reassuring look at the labor market, in the form of the normally routine report on weekly jobless claims, gave investors reason to buy back in. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both rallied over 2%, with the S&P posting its best day since late 2022 — a remarkable feat, considering the breadth of 2024's rally overall.

In the end, with a modest rally on Friday, the major indexes wrapped the week near where they started. All the more reason, as many strategists told Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman in the Morning Brief newsletter, to stay calm amid the chaos.

Yes I have a problem with premature evaluation. LOL I heard they have pills for this problem now....

Still, there's no question there is 'volatility' in the markets and in the economy overall. Let's just say all this up-and-down activity does not bode well for the future.

(Of course I hope I am wrong for obvious reasons.)

True - but WILD SWINGS are not necessarily 'normal'. But it's not just about Wall Street. If you look at other economic indicators - retail sales, fast food sales, car sales, housing costs, inflation, price gouging at the grocery stores etc - things are not looking good.

What I really think will happen: the economy will rumble along, like a car suddenly running out of gas, putt-putt-putting to around December or so then WHAM recession (official).

Let's see how this thread ages to see if I am right or wrong here. :)

When things get depressing and difficult usually people turn to porn as a relief and escape so I don't see it affecting porn negatively. When the twin towers went down that day and the months that follow were some of the largest sales in history for some cam companies where people needed that escape from reality.

Very true - but it kind of puts us in the position of hoping for the worst. But I know what you mean.

fuzebox 08-10-2024 06:05 PM

I think acquirer risk scrubbing and lowered card limits will have a greater effect than the consumer's perceived entertainment budget.

pornlaw 08-10-2024 09:36 PM

The larger issue for the US is the debt ratio between the interest paid vs the actual tax dollars collected.

The US is paying about $3.5 trillion in interest on the debt and only collecting $4.5 trillion in taxes...

The yearly budget is about $6.5 trillion. So every year we are adding $5 trillion a year to the debt.

At some point soon, the tax collected will equal the interest paid.

You cannot keep kicking this can down the road... you can keep printing money and raising inflation or you start cutting the budget. Either way, its not good in the short term for the economy.

I think a lot of people haven't wrapped their heads around inflation enough.

If you were averaging 10 sales a day at $35 pps in 2004 ($10k/mo or so), you'd have to make almost $18k this month (or 17 $35 pps sales a day) to actually have the same income.

I completely agree. And when you see Biden/Kamala regime blaming others for inflation, saying things like "Putin price hike" or "Big corp price gauging" etc we know they are lying. Because all of us adults, by now, should know that only one thing causes inflation:

I had great sales during and after the 2008 meltdown, which was 100x worse, so sex and food are the only things that sell always, apparently.

Sex is a biological need. It's not something you can suppress.

Jewellery, high-end clothes and flashy cars are not something you truly need.

bmwracer41 08-12-2024 02:32 PM

Good . Bad Times

3 things that will always sell

Alcohol - Drugs
sex - Porn
Vanity

We in a good space, just finding the right niche. When I see more mainstream ads on adult sites , thats a good marker for our industry, and to me, its been a big increase over last year...

Good luck
