Why are all cars in USA with big liter engines?

Yes I know the gas there is 4 times cheaper than in Europe, and cheaper than water :Graucho

But, do you really need those big cars that are like standard there with big motors?

In Europe, average is 1.4l motors with 70 to 100 hp, and this is quite good for almost everyone that uses his car for anything but racing. These cars are also rather economic, styled good, small and goodlooking.

Why do american mainstream cars have to be with 2l engines minimum, weight 2 tons...and look rather ugly.

(We're talking about mainstream cars in the $15k area)

100-120 mph is very good top speed IMO, for a car. If you like to go faster, just get a bike and you'll reach 150-180mph and 10 times the adrenaline.

Bigger gas tanks means better gas mileage?

I get 45 mpg in a Jetta, how many miles per gallon does an Escalade get?

Cardboard Box 05-28-2003 06:49 PM

I don't know many Americans who drive American cars anymore.

Most Americans drive foreign cars. GM makes the ugliest fucking cars on the market.

We all have small penises and need big engines to compensate.

Mine has a 5.7L. I need a vehicle with an engine that big for the same reasons everyone else in North America does, for pulling tree stumps out of the ground. I couldn't pull out tree stumps with a 1.2 L. Silly foreigners.

Because the new trend for eurotrash and ricemobile marketing is to completely fabricate the horsepower specifications.

ie, a 1987 buick regal t-type is listed at 240hp but when it is actually measured in reality it comes out to 270hp.

Do the same with a ricer or eurotrash vehicle of this year that claims 210-240 hp, you will find it only manages about 160-180.

Its creative marketing, fraud and flat out bullshit that idiots use to argue against domestics.

Rochard 05-28-2003 11:24 PM

It's the American way. Bigger is better.

We like our cars big with big fucking engines.

Like my Mustang. Big V8 engine, fast in a straight line. Get me a road with curves and I'm fucked.

Stump 05-28-2003 11:43 PM

If you take a 4 banger and mod the fuck out of it, you can get some pretty good HP numbers (torque is another issue) :)

As far as 5L engines are concerned, I think they're over-rated. Why bother paying 10 G's on an engine when you can get a B18C 4 banger for like 5k and a big turbo for like 4k... not only does it cost alot less, it also retains its great gas mileage (which is something domestics are less than good at)

Ah yes. The wonderfull domestic/import arguments kick ass. The domestic guys seem to have a shorter fuse tho.. EH, I call em as i sees em.

Anyway, I saw a pic once and it said something along the lines of "dont mess with me or i'll argue with you over the internet".

Heh.

Dude, you do realise that almost all advertised HP numbers are measured at the flywheel, and when magazines and shit review them, the HP is measured at the wheels, right?

When they advertise a 87 buick at 240 HP, its probably because they want the person that buys it to be like, "wow, theres even more power then they said!"

When they advertise an RSX at like 240 HP, but it gets reviewed at 200, its because theres a loss of power in the drivetrain. Dipshit.

I think your a little off there... No company in its right mind would advertise a car with false HP numbers like that...

And one more thing... Whats with "ricemobile"? An import classifies as rice if its got a big body kit and decals all over it. How is a stock honda civic (an economy car no less) a ricemobile?
You're the kind of domestic enthusiast that gives the rest of the domestic guys a bad name.

well, someone has got to set the record strait, so i guess i'll do it.

first of all, for the $5k you spent just to buy the block of that little 4cyl, i can build a v8 that will be faster. without the $4k turbo. spend dollar for dollar on an import 4cyl motor vs a good v8, and the v8 will hands-down have exponentially more power.

$10k on a ricer motor might net you 350-400hp if done very correctly and carefully. $10k on a v8 can net you 800hp or more, depending on the longevity and parts used (i.e. a crower entry-level 4340 crank vs. a trickflow top-end 4340 crank).

you can build a small block chevy to 400hp and still get 20mpg. it's been done, nothing new. and you can do that for probably around $6000.. i'm working on a similar project now.

the only import motor that i can think of that you can get extremely good numbers on relatively low $$ is the rx7 motor. they did that one right.

but, under NO circumstances is there EVER a replacement for displacement. dollar for dollar, the larger motor will win. generally even big blocks do a tiny bit better than a small block, as well. a 7+L motor modded about the same as a 5.7 will always make more power.

as far as horsepower ratings, gm is very notorious for under-rating their power numbers. i've heard ford guys say this as well. i've seen it, i've owned them, it's true. even rwhp. take for example the most notable under-rating around. the (late-60's early-70's era) corvette was rated at a respectable 350hp. a _completely stock_ model was dynoed - 30 years later - and was still pulling a healthy 450hp. on the showroom floor, this was probably around 500hp.

i've never seen an import do anything like that, and i've owned a few of those, and am around a lot. if they did that, there's no excuse for my old toyota turbo celica not to be blowing away 3rd gen camaros on a regular basis.

and in the end, do you know a single 4cylinder car that can make 10hp per cubic inch? nope. 5000hp on 500cid:

http://www.iroc409.com/pub/Andrew_Cowin.jpg

there are decent imports out there, but it would take too much money and too much work to make a 1.4L 4 banger to romp on a $7000 v8 in a camaro.

enjoy! :thumbsup

you want the real answer to your question..

as my good friend Jay-Z said:

For the power of the P-U-S-S-Y"

I hear that. Most of the people I know drive Euro cars and US trucks or SUVS. I'm a sucker for German cars and I think we can all agree that Japanese cars are quite amazing (price wise, performance wise and reliability wise)....just my :2 cents:

manilaheat 05-29-2003 10:50 AM

The only really cool American car is a Lincoln Town Car.

I want one of those to drive around in.

deniska 05-29-2003 11:13 AM

My small foreign 2 passneger car has a 4.3l v8... eats gas but who cares I like having a V8.

rowan 05-29-2003 11:21 AM

I drive a 'big aussie six' - 4.0L 6 cyl. I'm 6'6 tall so I'm kinda limited in the number of cars that I can fit into comfortably.

I still haven't worked out whether big refers to the engine size, or the body size. :winkwink:

bryany 05-29-2003 11:22 AM

I have a big V8 4.7 in my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It has 250HP and 320ft-lb torque @ 3000 (with a few mods ;) ) All-time 4 wheel drive that has some fawking balls. It keeps up with a lot of cars.

Lemme see a 1.8L pull a full size boat :Graucho

Donny 05-29-2003 11:25 AM

I drive a 2002 Ford Powerstroke Diesel Crew Cab 4x4 Truck. It has 525 lb-ft torque. I need that to haul my camera gear.

"Almost all" - are you implying ricers and eurotrash makers started doing it so now domestics do too?

You can also claim your new "1000W" made in taiwan amp is the shiznit but it will only deliver about 150W peak to your speakers before the signal becomes unusable.

All marketing hype measured in a controlled evironment and rice is the worst offender by far. Can't pull the numbers, just measure differently or make them up.

iroc409 05-29-2003 11:48 AM

no rebuttles? dammit! :Graucho

edit: besides, gimme a fucking break. just because some people have faster cars or bigger cars, doesn't mean it's a fucking penis replacement. everyone that doesn't have that shit always whines that crap.

some people just like to go faster, or in more style than some 1.8L renault.

you haven't been around too many american cars lately, have you? ahh, ignorance IS bliss!

The Heron 05-29-2003 12:07 PM

We Americans need big vehicles and engines to pull all our toys (boats, 4wheelers, dirtbikes, motorhomes, trailers, etc) to our vacation houses out in the country of course! We also need them because we like to run over pedestrians and small animals that happen to be in the way.

iroc409 05-29-2003 12:12 PM

thinking about it, i think there are more cheap import vehicles than there are cheap domestics. i'm talking the sub-$15k class. yeah, pretty sure about that...
