Elon Musk confirms that he’s limiting people’s ability to share outside news on X
Elon Musk has appeared to confirm that his social media company X, formerly Twitter, throttles traffic to other websites by stifling any posts that contain outside links.
Paul Graham, an influential tech investor and essayist, had complained on Sunday about X’s “deprioritization of tweets with links in them,” saying it made it harder to “find out what’s going on.” “Just write a description in the main post and put the link in the reply. This just stops lazy linking,” Musk replied. Here is some news of why some people do not add a link to every post on Twitter. For my ReTweet Service Clients… I would still add the link in the pinned post because we are forcing traffic to your posts.* But as the article suggests... you may want to create some posts with out links and then add them in the first comment https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1860812342210240995 |
Have you noticed the difference in engagement between posts with and without links in so far?

Do clickable links on video count as one?

Elon's platform, Elon's rules.

I feel like the most newsworthy thing here is him baldly admitting it.
Do you all also find this to be the case on other social platforms? As a webmaster, leaving links off pains me. We get a digital bill of rights and I think this should change, but I expect it won't. |

It may actually end up being much better search engine wise, you will have more people typing in your website name. |
Fuck X Iam on Bluesky

They have completely ruined links on X.
The problem is that even with links, we're always gonna come back anyway, so there was no purpose to do this. It's so dumb. |

And that suppression is the biggest problem. It's dogshit, but no one really does anything about it. And I'm not sure you can. |
I think people are blowing this out of proportion. They're focused too hard on "gaming the algorithm to go viral" and think that every little thing about it is a negative and never consider that their content just sucks.
I don't care about any of the tricks or throttling of my posts that have links in them... I still average about half to a million impressions on my tweets every 2 weeks, and if I decide to really get into things ~5M impressions a month. |
bro how ya been?
the problem with X is gonna be the same problem mp3.com had years ago when they paid people based on streams. people gamed it to extinction. so what's happening on X now is that blue checks are interacting with each other because it increases their pennies, so most of the conversations aren't even genuine anymore. just people jerking each other off for a few cents per click. the sad part is how clueless the people on X really are. They would make 10-20 times the paychecks if they just started their own website and drove traffic to it. But these folks don't know this - and the few who do, would rather engage in phony conversations for a few cents, instead of working on something that could be a career. It's stupid. Quote:

Don't focus on the turds, X is a gigantic site, there's bound to be a pool of shit floating somewhere, stay away from that. I don't care about making money on the platform. I only went Premium+ because I do business on the platform and a bit of marketing of my products so the $11/mo is beneficial to me. But then I monetized because why pay for it myself when they pay me more than enough to cover it and then some just by doing what I've always done and will do. It's not rocket appliance boys. https://i.imgur.com/XHTMbqJ.png |

I left Twitter. I was never big on Twitter, but recently all I see on Twitter was MAGA crap. I didn't follow anything political, only industry people. It was stunning to see the change.
I just deleted both of my accounts. Done. |
