HOT: Skype will be shutting down on May 5, 2025

Ok ... I still have lots and lots of contacts on skype

This sucks ..

Skype, the video calling platform that made headlines in the early 2000s, is finally shutting down. While the service isn’t as popular as it used to be, Microsoft claims that more than 36 million people used Skype daily to connect with their friends, family and colleagues.

In a blog post, Microsoft confirmed that Skype will be shutting down on May 5, 2025. The tech giant has been slowly phasing out Skype features. In December last year, the tech giant stopped selling credits for Skype numbers, which allowed users to make calls to anyone in any location.

How to switch from Skype to Microsoft Teams?
----------------------------------------------------

Microsoft says that in “the coming days, we will roll out the ability for Skype users to sign into Teams (free) on any supported device using their Skype credentials.” When users log in to Teams using their Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically be migrated to the app, allowing uses to quick pick up where they left off.

In the meantime, Microsoft says Teams users will be able to call and chat with Skype users and that Skype users can do the same.In case you are not interested in migrating to Teams, Microsoft allows users to export their chats, contacts and call history.

If you are want to switch to Teams, simply download the app on your device and login with your Skype credentials. Now, you will be able to see all your contacts and chats in the app, For those wondering Microsoft says current Skype subscribers will be able to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions until their next renewal period, while the Skype Dial Pad will remain available to paid users from the Skype web portal and within the Teams app.

Microsoft Teams is going to be a real pain as a regular replacement. I see What'sApp being the more natural replacement.

I'm planning on switching over to Telegram. Similar functionality, and lots of my contacts are already there

Guess I have to wait since I tried getting Teams set up this morning and it created a list of users from a totally different skype I was unaware of that I had years ago. Used the same email and password. One Team app on desktop said it couldn't recognize my info the other said it could be failed in so many ways.

plus they want you to pay for it which I didn't like

Looking forward to no longer seeing translated conversation requests from spammers.

Surprising or maybe not, considering Skype has basically been on life support in the last few years.

Teams is too much of a pain in the ass to be a proper replacement for the average person that's not in an organization. Conversations will shift to one of the other popular free apps on the market. I personally don't care for Telegram, but it's likely going to be between Telegram and WhatsApp.

One thing I like about apps like Skype is they don't require my actual phone number, so not crazy about the closing of Skype. Not to mention the workflow changes that will need to be made, contact replacements and loss of conversation histories.

Skype was always a pain for me but it had its run. So many scammers and jerks. Like ICQ you will be missed!

Huggles 02-28-2025 01:24 PM

First they came for MSN Messenger, and I did not speak out—because I was on ICQ.

Then they came for ICQ, and I did not speak out—because I was on Skype.

Then they came for Skype, and I did not speak out—because I was still on GFY.

Then they came for GFY—and there was no one left to listen to my drunk retarded shit.

WhatsApp is HUGE everywhere else in the world except the US and Canada.

In the UK people use it as their primary means of communication instead of their cell plan.

£10 a month for a cell plan and use WhatsApp for texts, called, etc, etc... Super cost efficient.

What a dick move by MS...

We have so many contacts on Skype with their specific ID, accumulated over 20+ years and that would be huge pain to move everyone to alternative.

Yeaaa ..

A lot has changed in our business in the last 25 years. Call it sick nostalgia (or just getting old), but I have fond memories of that time (1998/...). The online porn business was so different than it is today... it was a crazy ride. And it was really cool to work in this business, lots of friends, we earned a lot of money. Sky was the limit.

it was just fun... every day. There is nothing left of that.

People who weren't there at the time don't understand that, they don't know that way of working together and I don't blame them for that either.

Again it was a fun, crazy ride and I'm still happy that I was able to experience the whole ride.

But yeah it makes me a little sad to be honest. Oh well...
