yeah did that once... started again after a year of being smoke free.. fuckin most stupid fuckin thing i ever fuckin did fuckin.

For me it wasn't too hard, you get a urge once an hour/day/month to smoke and if you just wait 5minutes it goes away for me. Usually something triggers it like a beer or type of food but it takes a little willpower and you can stop.

Any advice on quitting, other than cold turkey?

I've done a major overhaul on my life. Diet, excercise, and mental health. I just have this one last hurdle, smoking.

What's funny is I was just talking about quitting smoking about 8 hours ago, wheezing and just dying in the middle of a training room where for 10 minutes I was drilled over and over again on grappling escape techniques by a Gracie. I literally could not keep going, I just fell over and tried to catch my breath.

Cold turkey is the way I'm comteplating right now. I have mini carrots in the fridge, a shitload of low fat granola bars with chocolate (gotta replace that smoke feeling with something).

Any other suggestions I would appreciate immensely.

GrimShawn 05-30-2003 01:05 AM

Somehow I have never smoked

i'm doing pretty much the same thing right now... i find it's best to just keep busy. like, work, for example. i can go all day without really even thinking about it if i'm busy enough.

fortunately i've got a _shitload_ of work right now, so it's all good :thumbsup

just get rid of all ur ashtrays, all your lighters, anything that has anything to do with smokes.. wait til you finish your last pack and clean up again... wash all your clothes, bedsheets - anything that smells like smoke...

then when u want a smoke do something else, drink water, practice ur fighting - whatever will take ur mind off wanting a smoke.....

good luck :thumbsup

the only thing is, i think it's harder to do all these things at once... like, add to the diet & excercise, and i just recently stopped my lifelong crutch of chewing my finger nails. it's wierd having usable hard things on my fingers tho...

True.. ive wanted to go back to kung fu training but I cant find the motivation... not smoking seems a big enough challenge for me right now... perhaps in a couple more weeks..

Anthony_A 05-30-2003 01:27 AM

d0se,

Not being able to breathe after 10 minutes of grappling is an eye opener. The reason we train is to be able to use it in the real world. The cold reality is after 10 minutes, I will gas out. Yes, most fights don't last a minute, but what if always comes to mind. I am literally spent, can't move, just trying to catch my breath. Maybe getting back in the Kung Fu might be the catalyst. I know training is definately for me.

Iroc, I've done them one at a time. Started 3 weeks ago on the diet, 2 weeks ago on the soda, 4 months ago on the mental health, and now the smoking. I definately wished I never started.

klik 05-30-2003 01:31 AM

Try shakin babies.. drowning kittens.. beating up old people.. clubbin baby seals... try to keep your mind off of those horrible horrible cigarettes.

If you have that kind of perserverance, and ability to train, you can't just not smoke?

Okay, remember this... when the going gets really tough and you think you are going to go fucking insane because you need a smoke, go ahead and light up. It will really take the edge off.

You're right the craving is always there, but lately for me it gets me sick to my stomach when I'm around smoke. If people party at my house now, I don't mind them smoking but I have to open the window and then it smells horrible for days. Mind you I was doing 2-3 packs a day for 15 years

Breathing..yes..I used to get frequent stabbing pains and start coughing spell everytime I laughed. That's all gone now =)

It's a bit like that girlfriend that you really liked, but it just didn't work out..

hojo 05-30-2003 03:11 PM

when are these cigarettes going to kill me? i've been smoking and smoking and its just not working!
