For freelancers in Hanoi try the midtown Lotte Hotel skybar (near the Japan and Australia embassies).

Never made it up there but word is that's the spot for freelancers.

Expect to pay about $15-20/night for a low end property, can use booking.com's map.

East of midtown Hanoi is the old quarter where they'll hawk massage parlors on the street.

What about daily spending?

I stayed near Bui Vien street, the backpacker district of Hanoi.
Very busy, look for a quiet hotel cause loud music everywhere.
There was also a cannabis bar around there.
Cannabis official forbidden, but was like a Dutch Coffeeshop.
Last time i was there everywhere where lurking balloons, but that trend seems over in Asia.

And than you have the neighbourhood around the BITEXCO skydeck building to go out.
Bitexco had Heineken tours, but closed now. Must be another rooftop bar now.
Many families, nice bars, less backpackers.

In Hanoi walking around Kiem Lake when the sun goes down is nice.

My conclusion, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh where too dirty and hot for me to stay long when i was there.
I wanted to walk in a bakery. And a rat as big as a cat jumped to the door to get out...
I didnīt go in. In my hotel a big rat came walking over the balcony.

I would do a stop in Da-Nang / Hoi An.

Didn't go after the hookers, but they where there in the bars.

Bui Vien is in Ho Chi Minh, not Hanoi*

I also recommend Da Nang (more quiet though, not idea for nightlife)

Godmothers in Ho Chi Minh if you want good breafast

Try Pizza4p for pasta/pizza

and then hit the famous pho places and seafood pancake places

Go to district 3 to eat snails and drink beer

And don't miss the beauty of Vietnamese girls . . . :winkwink:

Groceries are about $10/day in Hanoi, kind of the world rate these days.

I've heard Saigon is a better playground.

Indeed i mixed the backpackers areas a little, i was in both.
Hanoi is The Old Quarter most popular.

Travelled from Hanoi to Phu Quoc.

High season is ending in Thailand, so i guess Vietnam will also be cheaper.

I stayed in this apartment for 1 month. 15 minute walk to all the bars. Or Grab, is Also good for ordering food.
But quiet, clean and whole apartment.
https://www.booking.com/hotel/vn/zodyhouse.html
200 euro for 1 week, nice price.

I went there after having 2 hotels with noise, dirt, rats on the balcony. And it was perfect.

Da Nang, Hoi An!
Daily costs start at 100 USD for a basic hotel, food and Grab, with no upper limit.
However, 10 days is not a very long time for Vietnam!

When I was in Thailand, I thought wow, rent and food is so crazy cheap...then I went to Vietnam and realized I have been overpaying in Thailand. :1orglaugh

Definitely a great place to get even high luxury at a fantastic price.

$100 per day??? I was in Nha Trang(similar to Da Nang) and paid $20/day for a LUXURY apartment with a rooftop infinity pool and gym and never more than $5-10 for a meal. Breakfast with 6 eggs, bread and orange juice was like $4.

Really, for a short-term rental?
I was Da Nang three months ago, i had no chance of getting a beachfront hotel with breakfast for that money!

The last time I was able to stay in a Southeast Asian hotel for $20 was in a bamboo hut without air conditioning, 20 years ago in Savannakhet.

Decent low end hotels with good enough wifi and a/c are 15 to 20 in hanoi and elsewhere in sea. Might have a gecko and a view of a wall, but in ok locations in the city center.

Greetings Beaver

Asia had many tourist this season. Many stayed longer cause Thailand also has 60 days visa free.
During high season, december, january, februari everything is much more expensive.
The whole world has holiday in those months.

I already had reserved my loft bungalow for 4 months during high season, 700 usd a month, with seaview. Very good price, i go there already for over a decade.
While people that rented the bungalows per day paid at least 50 usd a day.
In lower season i pay around 450 usd a month (including airco).

Now travelling around in Thailand and prices start dropping cause high season is over.
I am now in a beach resort for families. Cause there are hardly families :)
I pay now 500 usd for 2 weeks including breakfast and have a big bungalow.
If i negotiate for 1 month i think it would be 750 usd a month max. But now playing tourist and travelling around.
And this is one of the best bungalows on this beach and big, 40m2 with 2 work desk.
And concrete, no bamboo.
Will become cheaper every week now.

But the winter is over in Europe, can go back in that direction.
In Holland i would have needed 700 usd a month only for heating.
I hate cold.

Yeah, very short term...if I stayed for months, I would get it much cheaper.

I was staying at the Panorama building(not the hotel part, but the apartment part).

Yes, May to October is my favorite time in Thailand.
Nobody is there, and the air is relatively clean due to the rainy season.

Yeah, the condo was beautiful, too.

That would cost like $1k/night in NYC or LA. :1orglaugh
