The US had some of the worst problems with Covid because the politicians, especially the president at the time, completely mishandled the situation and dropped the ball on almost every front.
- Downplayed the virus from the start (it will magically go away)
- Admitted he lied about serious it was… on tape
- Mocked masks
- Pushed sketchy treatments
- Ignored his own health experts
- Held crowded rallies
- Tried to censor data
- Rushed “reopenings”
- Turned masks and safety into a culture war
- Got COVID himself after ignoring precautions
- Blamed everyone but himself
After he got Covid, he even told people not to be afraid of Covid.
No, it wasn't because the US has a lot of fat people. It was because the US has a lot of stupid people who elected a really, really stupid president.

Many of the countries you're referring to handled the situation more efficiently, had much smaller populations, or were hit by the pandemic right at the beginning, at the worst possible moment.
I doubt any countries had "no masks" and "no restrictions whatsoever." And if they did, I'm sure they paid the price.
