is anyone on older CPU's still getting win 11 updates?

MS ended win 10 support on OCT 14'th.

Win 11 is not officially supported for older CPU's. You have to manually install it but even than MS may halt security updates to you at any time..

I've still been getting auto updates, but I haven't seen a new in a little while.

How do you survive using an 8 year old CPU ?

Every 3-4 years since Windows 3.1

adultinnovation 11-22-2025 09:53 AM

I used to always update my entire pc every 5 years but when I got the i5 6600k.. it was still going strong after 5 years.. so I didn't bother updating... it still does everything I need really. It's definitely time to upgrade soon though..

I still have a win7 laptop that gets updates without issues.

If you are forever working like I am, you deserve to upgrade your setup every few years. Besides being able to take advantage of the latest operating systems which also have the latest security updates etc, you enjoy more speed, more flexibility, etc.

My current work machine is an M4 Mac Mini with 24GB of Ram. I chose this one because I love Apple products, but also because I can run OS/X and Linux and Windows 11 all at the same time, in the same or different windows or screens. It lets me work really efficiently.

I don't have an answer for you but.... I upgrade every few years.

I just bought a new Microsoft Surface Pro and I use it for everything - tablet, laptop, and PC when hooked up to a docking station and monitor.

For my main PC I use a refurbished Alienware. I buy an used Alienware PC, strip it down, new hard drives, new CPU.....

Farang 11-23-2025 01:26 AM

you should install omarchy.

I got the 'extended' updates' offer for free... So Im good for another year - No need to update atm - It does EVERYTHING I need it too...

this makes no sense. why don't you just buy all the parts and build a new pc instead of modifying an old one

We have i7 powered machines in my office, and although we moved to using macbooks a year ago we still use the old win-PCs here and there and it is pretty annoying that it won't let upgrade to win11. 32GB RAM, i7, 1060 graphics cards.. I think the i7 is the "weak point" but it is actually absolutely ridiculous that those are "not good enough".
I think I won't buy a new, modern CPU just to get win11... Or should I?

OldJeff 11-24-2025 06:30 AM

the most recent i7 is from 2023. the oldest are from 2008.

Your CPU is supported if it is:

Intel 8th gen or newer (Core i3/i5/i7/i9-8xxx, 9xxx, 10xxx, 11xxx…)

AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer (2600, 3600, 5600, 7600, etc.)

Your CPU is not supported if it is:

Intel 7th gen or older

AMD Ryzen 1000 series (1200, 1600, 1700, etc.)

Either way , don't ever buy intel anymore. AMD has destroyed them in CPU's. only get Ryzen

we´re not on 11, still having updates for the next year on 10...

It´s fast enough to have 11 upgrade, however, the CPU is a 2020 I7 6500U, running smooth at about 3ghz, with 16gb of ram, is too old to run 11 unless wanting to self update & this doesn´t sound worth the hassel.

So we´re waiting to until next year, maybe mid 2026 for a new system, although hearing how shit 11 is, rather stay on 10 :2 cents:

Upgrading the PC is not really nessecary, an i7 can easily run Win 11.

Here in Rotterdan/NL we have a PC service shop that found a way to install Win 11 even on an i5. How they do it is ofcourse their secret, but it runs good and get al updates for only 70$

The only point is that they run slower, but they run. So try to find a similair shop where you live.

Yes, they did, but they did NOT.

Win 10 LTSC is supported at least until January 12, 2027, up to January 13, 2032, depending on the specific version. It is literally the very same Windows 10 that you have been using.

Quote:

End of life dates for different LTSC versions:
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019: End of support is January 9, 2029.
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021: End of support is January 13, 2032.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021: End of support is January 12, 2027.
EOL for Windows 10 (Home) does not mean your computer is going to explode. It just means there will be no more support and updates.

1. Have you ever used Windows support in your lifetime?
2. Just buy an updated antivirus and you are good to go.
3. Move on to Linux. Nowadays you can run pretty much any Win software on Linux. Gaming on Bazzite / SteamOS is even faster than on Win.

adultinnovation 11-29-2025 11:45 AM

I just installed win 11 clean from the ISO file with a Windows 11 USB installer made with Rufus... it has built-in options to remove hardware requirements like TPM 2.0. so it makes win11 install bypass any checks..

My PC is running great now.. I don't think I'll upgrade for at least until next fall now when the very newest Ryzen CPU's are out.

Next Generation (Zen 6): The successor to Zen 5, expected to be named the Ryzen 10000 series, is projected for release in late 2026 to early 2027.

The i5 6600k was an amazing CPU from intel... It's lasted me almost 10 years.. and is still doing what I need it to do...

While it was a powerhouse in its prime, the i5-6600K is showing its age today, primarily due to having only four cores and four threads (lacking Hyper-Threading). Modern games and applications are better optimized for multi-core processors. It can still run many games, but it may bottleneck with powerful modern GPUs and struggle with heavy multi-tasking or intensive applications. Despite no longer being a top-tier performer, its impact on a generation of PC builds ensures its place in hardware history.
