Microsoft to abandon standalone IE browser!

Quote:

Web users now face a situation in which the dominant browser, which achieved that dominance in large part by being offered free of charge, will now only be available as part of an operating system that costs $199 for the "Home" edition and $299 for the "Professional" edition. Upgrades for Windows XP Home and Professional cost $99 and $199, respectively.

Good for these alternative browser companies, not so good for webmasters. Can you imagine how old the average browser will become if the punters have to upgrade their OS every time they want to upgrade their browser? Most will not migrate to Opera or Mozilla, they'll just keep using their ancient IE browser until they buy a new PC.

that is hardly news as how many people use a different OS?

AdultNex 06-04-2003 10:12 AM

You can always grab it off Kazaa. :Graucho

This total screws small business's that run Win98 or Win2000. Due to all the security flaws that IE has you won't be able to goto windowsupdate and patch anymore if you aren't on the current OS.

NBDesign 06-04-2003 10:14 AM

Too lazy to read the article... does this mean that it will not be updated through the windows update anymore?

As much as I can't stand Microsoft.... There is such a thing as Service Packs. They would include necessary updates to IE (on products that haven't hit EOL anyway). Am I wrong?

should not be a surprise.... businesses are designed to pursue money.

But having pushed its Web browser software with the help of its OS monopoly, Microsoft now has the opportunity to reverse the process, using its dominance in browsers to prod other customers to upgrade to new versions of Windows.
The man knows what he's doing, no doubt in my mind this is what Gates was planning from the start. When it came out I wondered why he was giving out IE for free. Fucking little evil genious, I hate the man but I'd love to be him.

As long as webmasters keep using standards to build websites it shouldn't really matter.
They are going to take away the media player as well..
I think thats why apple, and to some extent real, would like to see MPEG-4 take off and have it as good as mpeg-1 has had it all these years

That's the point...... IE has become the standard, and continues to set the standards in web page design. Now they'll start selling it, and the average user will have to continue to buy the most current version.

This is why they gave it away for free - They killed Netscape. Now they'll own the market.

trannydollars 06-04-2003 10:22 PM

Scootermuze, what do you think of Lindows? I've heard nothing but bad reviews.

Zprogramz 06-04-2003 11:59 PM

Apple's Safari browser is free an twice as fast as Internut Exploder anyway.
