Well thank goodness I asked!

I have been screaming to go to the Netherlands for years and looks like this year I can. Everyone tells me it's a great place for creating art and you can really work 'with' the government for one another's mutual benefit instead of 'against'.

There are soooo many Dutch here in the U.S. Everything had a Dutch name where I grew up.

Half the kids I grew up with are Dutch. My great grandmother was Dutch.

So since I like the art, architecture, cuisine I'm goin' to the Netherlands to chill out for a while, go to some museums to study and draw and paint the scenery and people.

I'll be studying about the country beforehand so I don't do something stupid like piss off the Queen or worse.

All you Dutch webmasters keep in touch with me eh!

I can't believe it. but the girl I used for my model for one of my logos tells me she's dutch. I put a beret on her head for the toon though.

Close to Alkmaar here...:)

Greg B 06-25-2003 09:22 AM

Ha! Now that I know all the N'rlanders are here we are definitely gonna party!

I forgot two important things about the Netherlands:

1.) How's the new food?

2.) Are the women 'cool' ?

Not necessarily in that order.

How're taxes, hospitals etc.?

Is petrol through the roof? What's a pack of cigarettes go for?

Ron2k1 06-25-2003 09:24 AM

I'm from the Netherlands as well, Winterswijk (Gelderland)

1. I like the food. It's not so fat as what they normally serve in US(although I was tourist there, so not sure if that's normal)

Anyway, we have some really good restaurants. Overall I would say our food is great. Our national food is nothing special tho.

2. Uhm yes they are cool :-)

3. Taxes, you mean on products, or on living? Sales tax is 19%, but in all prices you see on the cards is the sales tax included already. Income Tax is 40-50%.

Over patrol. Yeah that is expensive here. Aprox 1,32 dollar PER LITRE!

Hospitals are great. .

Uhm well need to know more:)

40-50% ???

Figures. Sorta like Switzerland. But whatta you get for such a high tax rate? Do they deliver the mail in bikinis? It must go somewhere worthwhile.

What about cost of living? What's an apartment go for in U.S. dollars? Houses/mortgages?

That's the kicker. If the cost of living is low it can justify high taxes. But if the cost of living is high in addition to high taxation then it better have beautiful nude women frolicking to and fro on a 24/7 basis big time!

Well we have good roads, and health insurance, and retirements are pretty good.

Well a house, well difficult, look at www.funda.nl to see what the prices are....
http://www.funda.nl/koop/detail_foto...chmode=normaal for example is 995.000 EURO, which equals to 1159403,40 US dollar.

Or example, a car

Nissan 350Z price= 50.000 EURO, which is 58261,48 US dollar

Food, pfff, hard to say depends on your needs:-) But I know Holland is NOT CHEAP at all to live

D'OH! Forgot to ask about job/opportunity market. What's cool about my present work is I can do it anywhere as long as I've got electricity and a phone line.

I doubt I would have to pay that tax rate unless my income came directly from within the boundaries. With webmastering you know as well as I do that you can have your money stashed in banks worldwide and just use a debit card or other means.

Yet I'ld like to see what talent is there.

Well you need a life permit for living her at the first place. But over TAX, you can't hide all income, but you can open US/Gibraltar, whatever company and leave some of your income over there....But for Dutch Life permit you need at least around 40K profit a year in Dutch company, to get your permit
(something like this)

Wait a minute. I recall back in the late 80s I got an official letter from both Denmark and Switzerland offering me citizenship. If I recall it was because I was an artist and I had been recommended.

What I recall is back then it was $20k but the governments were putting that in an account up front.

In my case if I check again it may still be worthwhile.

Lemme hit the books and make some calls.

You can do work as a freelancer and not establish a company as well, that should probably work in your cash, especially in combination with keeping your funds in Intl. Banks

OH of course. That's the beauty of the web. I can go to bumfuck-where-the-fuck and as long as I have web access and electricity and a cc or debit card and ATM I'm in the clear.

I've been to remote fucking jungles where dudes were still cooking people, but sure as shit, amongst the choking foliage and wild animals there will be an ATM right smack-dab there.

Anyone have recommendations for a U.S./Holland based immigration lawyer who specializes in U.S. to Holland immigration?

That's who Greg should talk to.

Thanks Friction. I'll do that but I just remembered an old pal of mine who's actually Dutch royalty. He's a very famous comic book illustrator and one of the original artists in the old Heavy Metal comic book.

He lives in NY and is a kickass rockabilly/rock singer/guitarist.

It's really weird how for some reason I feel this urge to go to Holland. It's like a salmon going back to spawn or something.

I've gotta go home and talk to kin and friends and see who's where and then hop a flight to see what's up over there. I think I'm already in their artist's registry already. ( I think my memory is coming back! )

Greg as an American who has spent quite a bit of time in Amsterdam I do understand your desire to visit and move.

The Netherlands is a wonderful place with some of the best educated enjoyable people I have ever met anyplace.

Visit and then live your dream. I know I am going back next month for at least a week and I wish I could make it permanent.

zeebee 06-25-2003 04:11 PM

Well, saterday we're going to the 'ring' in germany with our bikes. We gonna try to see a glimpse from the F1 cars.

We leave from Mc Donalds Geleen. So anyone with a bike from the Netherlands near Limburg, come join us.

Wow Probono! Thanks for the info! For some weird reason I have this huge urge to visit the Netherlands. I also had a strong urge to go back east and visit Penn Dutch country. I think what it is is I grew up in a predominantly Dutch community with it's culture all around me. Plus having som Dutch ancestors.

I have to deal with a family tragedy at present but that should get handled soon and then I'll make way for the Netherlands proper.

Somehow I feel like it's a place I wanna be part of. ( If I can behave myself )

So how's the living there? Any spots to visit? I have friends all over Scandinavia and they're all encouraging me to visit. I need to handle business first though. As having taken art history in college I know I'll have a ball just checking out the art alone.

Any customs I need be aware of? ( there was that time in Australia a friend told me where one of his crew didn't want to drink at the bar and told the bartender 'no!' and turned his glass upside down and next thing he knew he was lying on the floor. Seems there's a custom down under that if you turn your glass upside down that means you're willing to fight everyone in the bar. )

I second that :thumbsup

But the short version; Be nice, don't ask people what their income is (I believe that's normal in the US?) and be careful with our minorities. Some of em have itchy fingers, we're working on the problem :)

Minorities? What minorities? From where? Itchy fingers? Like they are pickpockets or carry guns?
