My worst nightmare. . . .a black man with a gun

I swear, give a guy a gun, and a badge, and a nice car with pretty lights and watch the power go to his head.

So, I am on the 405 freeway and I come up on this squad car for the local junior college police department. Knowing he is well out of his jurisdiction, I change lanes and blow past him.

What does this guy do? Throws on his red lights and initiates a traffic stop.

Eventually I get off the freeway (it was my offramp) and pull over to see what he wants.

Cop: License, registration, and proof of insurance please. You know why I pulled you over?

Me: Not really.

Cop: You know how fast you were going?

Me: 75?

Cop: 80, you know what the speed limit is?

Me: 70?

Cop: 65

Me: Hmmm

Cop: When was the last time you were cited?

Me: No idea

Cop: Ever been arrested?

Me: Ever?

Cop: Yes

Me: Well yeah.

Cop: How long ago?

Me: I don't know.

Cop: What were you arrested for?

Me: Assault or something, Don't remember exactly how they worded it.

Cop: Anything in the car I should be worried about?

Me: Just me.

Cop: Stay in your car.

Me: Are you going to cite me?

Cop: Just stay in your car.

2 minutes later

Cop: Mr Brown, if I ever stop you again there will be no discussion.

Me. Good

WTF? Does this guy think he is on COPS or something? Like he has jurisdiction on CA freeways. I almost wish he had cited me. I would have loved to get him in court and have him explain his little power trip to the judge.

MassAppeal 07-16-2003 05:18 PM

he was college police? for what mesa?

Sly_RJ 07-16-2003 05:18 PM

I'm afraid of the Mexican man on the corner making my burrito. Who knows what he's putting in there.

detoxed 07-16-2003 05:21 PM

Ok, so you passed a cop and didnt expect to get pulled over? heh. Lots of police departments have agreements with other local sheriff's and police where they can do traffic stops, etc in other jurisdiction if they see it. The university cops here give DUI's all over town on the roads near campus.

El Camino Junior College. He probably has jurisdiction for a block on the perimeter of the school

Same here TDF. Anyway I think the Campus police here are on the police force or are subcontracted out to the college by the police force as all the campus police still were a badge from our police department.:2 cents:

clubsexy 07-16-2003 05:28 PM

if I was on a city street, near the college, then yeah, I might expect to possibly have him try to exercise his authority, but on the fucking freeway?

And yeah, cops have authority in other cites under certain situations, but it has to be authorized by the chief of police for the city in question. I know this quite well as I have been involved in court cases where this was an issue.

It would not apply in this case.

Campus cops are not "rent a cops". They're full blown cops with the same training. They're simply assigned to a campus.

A good friend of mine is going through the Academy right now and was going to be a campus cop but decided to take a job in Sac instead.

No shit, I didn't know this. So are you saying that if I get a red light and stick it on my car I can pull people over?

as a matter of fact yes, however, you would also be subject to arrest for impersonating a cop, color of authority, and probably a couple other things that don't come to mind immediately
