Queen Cleopatra was the last ruler of the Ptolemeic Dynasty... It's amusing that so many associate her so strongly with the ideal of Egypt.. Yes she was an Egyptian Queen, however she was in fact Greek in descent. She could speak 9 languages, was incredibly intelligent, and a very devoted mother of 8 children as they believe now. They also now believe she was rather plain, as opposed to incredibly beautiful, simply that her spirit and personality was so charismatic that she was incredibly attractive and enigmatic to men. Contrary to some beliefs as well, she did NOT rule as a pharaoh. Only one woman in Egyptian History was confirmed to have ruled as a true Pharaoh (she even dressed as a man and wore ceremonial beards etc), and that was Hatshepsut, Daughter of Thothmes the 2nd of the 18th dynasty, and she ruled Egypt as Pharaoh for over 20 years. In fact, it was one of the most prosperous periods of egyptian history. This was only a few generations after the centuries-long occupation of the Hyksos was ended. Hatshepsut was the builder of the famous Obelisks at Karnak, as well as Deir El Bahri, which to this day is considered one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture ever built.

Cleopatra didn't actually do much in egyptian history other than create some romance, as intelligent as she was of a woman.

As for the other woman who was rumoured to have ruled as queen, that would be Nefertiti, wife of the heretic king Akhenaten. After he died, there was a period where a Pharaoh named Smenkhare ruled very briefly before Tutankhuman came to the throne. There is building evidence that this may actually have been Nefertiti in the guise of a man. However, only time will tell.

:) I've been studying Egyptology as a hobby for somewhere close to 17 years now ;) I have a lot of friends in the archeological and egyptological communities, including fairly prominent writers and archaeologists. I couldn't help myself :)

She may have been a greek ruling Egypt, but her love for Egypt was no less than if she'd been a blue-blooded Egyptian Princess.. It's said that she loved the people so much that she learned every dialect of Egyptian she could, so that she could understand and speak to them herself without a translator. None of the other Ptolomies even considered this. They spoke Greek at court.

Don't sell her short. Given what Rome was doing to Egypts neighbors and could have done to Egypt, she struck a pretty good bargin.

She did, but unfortunately for her and Egypt it was too little too late.. Pretty much nothing she could have done could have prevented the decline of the Egyptian Empire.. It was in it's decline well before even the Ptolomies were placed on the throne. Hatshepsut however did amazing things.. aside from her architectural accomplishments (thanks to Senmut, her lover and architect), she also re-established trade with Punt (it's in Africa), as well as several highly successful military campaigns and the consolidation of the power that was up for grabs in the time of her father and grandfather :)

If Cleopatra had come 500 year sooner, however, she would have been a force to be reckoned with.
