Filesharing = 5 years, $250,000 fine

You can thank the recording industry for this one.

A new bill proposed in Congress on Wednesday would land a person in prison for five years and impose a fine of $250,000 for uploading a single file to a peer-to-peer network.

MrPopup 07-17-2003 11:59 AM

Democrats!

"The bill was introduced by Reps. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.)."

SpaceAce 07-17-2003 12:00 PM

So ridiculous. The punishment does not fit the crime. I'm very anti-piracy and I still think all these laws are idiotic.

The US legal system is idiotic. :2 cents:

I'm sure somebody is working on some sorta annon type p2p as we speak. They will never be able to stop piracy.. They will keep making dumb shit laws and people will think of new ways to share files... :2 cents:

iwantchixx 07-17-2003 12:09 PM

This is fucking sadning, The law puts mor eimportance in biz than anythign else. Example: You can get 5 years + 250k fine for sharing a metalicock song online, but you go and rape a 9 year old you get 3 months and a 1k fine :ak47: :ak47: :ak47:

no kidding. but remember, it's not about traditional values anymore, but about money. and file sharing supposedly makes the big guys lose a lot.

fucking pathetic

iwantchixx 07-17-2003 12:14 PM

This REALLY pisses me off ,, alot. I have an ex who was raped by her grandfather for 3 years. he got 2.5 months and a restraining order was rejected by the judge. Someone should just plant pirated software in his house. he would be locked up for a long time then.

Jon2 07-17-2003 12:15 PM

Great...Lets fill the jail cells up even quicker

lagwagon 07-17-2003 12:15 PM

I think someone already released a superior version of Kazaa that keeps you anonymous.

evildick 07-17-2003 12:29 PM

Actually I think it is called Kazaa K++.

Eric 07-17-2003 12:32 PM

Actually this is the great thing about the American Legal system. A bill like this can be presented. But it will never pass. It is too broad.

funkmaster 07-17-2003 01:04 PM

bye bye filesharing to americans ... still legal in the rest of the world.

Yeah true but it's pissing me off watching them spend all of this time on hopeless bills when they could be spending their time trying to figure out how to stop wasting my money and also getting us out of this insane deficit.

Yeah, this is like that FBI warning at the beginning of every VCR tape. That worked like a charm, didn't it?

hardjoko1 07-17-2003 01:57 PM

Speaking of crime against property, what about this asshole that commit fraud against many people.

http://gofuckyourself.com/showthread...hreadid=129750

How much he will get? What about a thief that stole $1000 from my office and costs me thousands more?

Hello, there are more people to protect

grogan 07-17-2003 01:58 PM

with kazaalite you show up as username kazaalite

and people have msged me asking about a file i didnt have, so obviously a zillion people are logged under that name.

gotta be good for something. they can look up that username and will get different ips all the time.

anyway, next kazaa will have some more anonymos features i bet. but still, anyone sending you a file is showing their ip.

cash69 07-17-2003 02:37 PM

ya i can go rob a bank and shoot some one but not kill them .. get in a high speed chase for a hour or 2.. and be out of prison in 4 years.. but the person that dowloads a song at work while he's doing other shit on the computer will be there for 5 years and have restitution for the rest of their lives

thewebgarage 07-17-2003 02:39 PM

Howard Berman (D-Calif) his district is in north hollywood and I believe covers the location of universal studios one of the largest record libraries in the world. Ironically this company is owned by a french company not an american one.

pyro 07-17-2003 02:40 PM

I agree, this law cannot last.. kazaa?

bigdog 07-17-2003 02:49 PM

i can see college kids in their dorms saying don't do that you can get 2 to 5 for sharing you will get less if you just steal cd's from bestbuy

traffictrader 07-17-2003 03:22 PM

you guys are going off on the wrong things man....

I just read about a guy that got life in jail for stealing $20... it was his third strike and he had multiple felony history, including voilence and drug dealing....

What I'm saying is, just because someone COULD go to jail for 5 years for uploading a single file, doesn't mean they WILL.

That grandfather who raped the friend for 3 years COULD had gotten life in jail, but he didn't.
