Any sysadmins here? or knowledgable people?
well i have a cable modem, id like to hook it to 2 computers.
I do have a router, and i can definately do it. My cable company charges us for each computer. If i use a router, it will have same IP i think, right? Is there a way for them to tell i have 2 pc's running? |

Just pay the $15 extra to use another computer and get 1 less of your thousands of feeder sites designed each month.

If that doesn't work, then format c: |
Use a router that does NAT. Most home routers have Network Address Translation and DHCP so that oyu can have lots of machines on the net and share one IP address from the ISP.

No they can't see multiple machines running. You can also just stick 2 network cards in the machine 1 hooked up to your DSL and the other to the second machine. Setup DHCP and share network card 1 and voila.....working......no need for a seperate router at all. DynaMite |
you can do it, just get a linksys or some other router

you dont need 2 network cards in 1 computer. but no they cant tell.
the router acts as a hub. i have my 5 port wireless router here. just plug your cable modem into the router onto the end. then each computer into each slot. usally the router uses the web usally http://192.168.0.1 to configure it it feeds out a private ip for each computer on the local network then 1 external ip which your isp sees. |
I have cable modem, 3 network cards - 1 for the cable modem and 2 are linking computers thru a crossover UTP cable + ICS (internet connection sharing) setup under win2k.
Works good |
Get a router that does NAT (Network Address Translation), and preferably DHCP. It will give RFC1918 addresses to your computers, and "translate" the traffic so that the outside world only sees your one "real" IP address. Most of these routers will let you use up to ~250 internal devices/computers this way. You can even get some with inbuilt wireless.
