Kevin Yank's "Build your own database driven website using php and mysql" book rocks. It's what I first started with along with many others. :thumbsup

TDavid's 16 part PHP course at http://www.scriptschool.com/ is really good. Once you have the basics, I've found that the best way to learn is through practice, looking at other people's source code to see how it works, and looking up functions on php.net as you need them.
I'd also recommend getting a free trial at http://safari.informit.com/ |
only publisher in tech books thats worth a damned is O'Reilly. got 3 of them on my desk right now.
online courses are good to read, but a good book is much better. and you always have it nice and handy to look back at. |
"PHP & MySQL For Dummies"
fucking excellent book, all you need. |
