i read the great gatsby, amoung a couple others of those several years ago. i don't remember it very well, but from what i do remember from it, it seems it was rather fucked up and rather melancholy. maybe i was too young :(

Jakke PNG 08-14-2003 06:33 AM

I can't read more than one book at a time.. although, I usually read a book at once. Depending on the size of course, I didn't read lord of the rings without sleep ;)

Gutterboy 08-14-2003 06:34 AM

My next reread is going to be Catcher in the Rye. Its been 9 years.

Great novel.

I do like fiction though, just haven't found any lately that I've really gotten into.

If you could recommend just one novel to me, what would it be?

Corleone 08-14-2003 06:54 AM

i just finished to read some books by the dalai lama. very interesting:thumbsup

BRISK 08-14-2003 06:57 AM

I can't seem to stick with just one book at a time, I read a chapter of one book then pick up another and another and eventually I finish one and bring another into the rotation.

Right now I've got these books:

- Media Control, by Noam Chomsky

- The Essays of Warren Buffett

- How the Mind Works, by Steven Pinker

- Myths to Live by, by Joseph Campbell

- Duck Egg Blue, by Derrick Neill

Among the Thugs- Bill Buford (American journalist's vivid account of time spent with English Soccer hooligans)

American Gods - Neil Gaiman (just started, interesting so far. Fiction piece on a small town in the midwest that becomes a battleground for mythic gods of past. So far it reminds me of the Stand by S King.)

I decided to reread Brooks, Flesh and Machines and the complete Hp Lovecraft works.

Nice.

I like Campbell.

If it wasnt for him, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Star Wars wouldnt have so many religious undertones.

Good stuff.

SleazyDream 08-14-2003 09:41 AM

some stupid novel - yearly
popular sceince - monthly
winnipeg free press - daily
GFY - hourly

eatapeach 08-14-2003 09:52 AM

the comedian bill hicks used to do a routine about how he was in a waffle house in nashville tennessee reading a book and the waitress came up to him and asked:

"what you reading for?"

and he replied:

"I've been asked 'what am I reading' before, but never 'what am I reading for'. I guess I'm reading so I never become a fucking waffle waitress."

I grew up in Nashville, so this bit had particular relevance to me.

I'm reading motivational books lately. Two really good ones are:

Grow Rich with Peace of Mind - Napoleon Hill

Make It Big - Frank McKinney

:thumbsup
