gornyhuy 09-23-2003 10:21 AM

I'm having the same problem right now accessing google. Could be a regional DNS problem.

Hosts file is in
windows/system32/drivers/etc
or
winnt/system32/drivers/etc

I just found hundreds of redirects in my hosts file for all the big search engines. I am VERY careful about what I download and install and click. Somebody is pretty slick out there.

AFAIK IE still has unpatched bugs that makes it possible to run code of choice on your computer thruu a webpage. Use http://www.mozilla.org/ instead.

listen smartass.. i make money from the web.. this means that
97% of my clients use MS IE.. i'd like to see what they see..

gornyhuy 09-23-2003 12:41 PM

Agreed.
Take your mozilla and shove it up your ass. BTW Just because it is unexploited doesn't mean it is unexploitable.

MrThumbs, glad to see the salad tossing is back!!!!

Why the attitude? Just informing you about some IE security issues, how you prob. got infected.

Sure, you might enjoy seeing what your users see. But hey, now you got owned just like your users prob. has been too .. =) congrats.

I suggest disabling ActiveX until microsoft releases a patch before someones does something nastier then modifying your hosts file.

Of course mozilla isn't perfect, but currently I only know about one serious vuln (a nonpublic one ;]...) in it while IE has a publicy well-known vuln that makes it very easy for an attacker to execute code of his choice.

Im sure alot of TGPcheaters are abusing it atm. I wouldn't want to get owned myself so I dont run IE atm. I gave you a heads up about it and you come back with insults? *sigh*

Btw, disabling ActiveX doesn't seem to protect against this bug either... hm. My patch for the moment is not using IE at all. I suggest anyone that doesn't wanna get owned to do the same .. or only surf well known sites.

Norton Antivirus picked up/stopped one way to exploit this .. but I think there's alot of different ways to do it that norton doesn't detect.

no but it should clear your hosts file , and any other hooks that you may not have noticed.
