Half Life 2 Source Code Leaked

There is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Unfortunately those who want to use it to cheat already have it, we need to get the word to legitimate customers to educate them about the situation. "

they've already missed their intended release date, i've heard it may be next year now before it hits. that should be enough time to remedy this.

Morgan 10-02-2003 02:32 PM

probably why about 3 weeks ago they announced that it will not make its sept 30th release date an is scheduled to come out early 2004. shitty

liquidmoe 10-02-2003 03:04 PM

Late release date but its the only game worth waiting for at this point. The pushback shouldn't hurt them at all, but if we are in mid 2004 and they still havent released they will get worked over. Just like Nvidia did.

Gateway69 10-02-2003 03:07 PM

Btw I know most of the guys working on HL2, but here is Gabes Response to what happend.. man someone really fucked them..

-----------
Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

the game isnt slated till end of Nov beginning of Dec but having worked in the game industry for 9 years before doing adult things slip..

Morgan 10-02-2003 04:46 PM

ID Software probably did it. They feel threatened.

Not much you can do with it unless it includes the art, textures and sound :)

bigdog 10-05-2003 07:49 PM

Since the source is out doesn't it make it easier for hackers to break into computers when halflife2 players go online

integrated 10-05-2003 07:50 PM

who cares i want halo 2

NoCarrier 10-05-2003 07:55 PM

Taken from sharereactor :

First off, you want the source? Go and grab it , BUT you cant do shit with it.

This packed file is 30 MB. Unpacked its aorund 100 MB and contains source files. These files can be used to create programs. These programs are nice, the code is fun to look at, but you have no Half-Life 2. Whats missing is the resources, all the models, levels, scripts, textures, etc. If you program (really, not just html or something like that...) and are fluent in C++ then this might be interesting for you to look at. And if you are a competitor of Valve you have it already anyways.

To 99,9% of the people reading this, the file will be USELESS. To the rest, it might be interesting to look at, see how they structured things, have a hands on look at their game engine and stuff, but not of real value. And about cheats... Forget it. Until you have the resources, you cant write real cheats for it that would work in online play. And the other ones in singleplayer are easy as hell anyways. So stop talking about that.

Valve made the mistake of not having enough security. I am sure they cursed themselves and yelled a lot already, but no one can take it back now. So go on with your lives and let that matter rest. Sooner or later we will have the full game and then this will be mostly forgotten.

Gateway69 10-05-2003 09:29 PM

there are a few issues with this,

Why would u want to buy the Source Engine from valve if the source is out on the net :)

I have a feeling most game developers have d/led this the source code and are looking at how valve is doing some things and stuff that valved did will prob show up in certain games or the theory of this will.

now the other thing is all the network code and steam data was in there which will cause a fucking headache for trying ot keep a game cheat free. We all know when someone is cheating in games it just makes it not fun to play anymore. IF enough lame ass script kiddies start using exploties nobody will want to play.

Of course they can change a few things here and there before the release but still the main system is there for all to look at.

:(

doom3 will own half life 2. end of story. doom was the first mainstream original fps game, they aren't going to let it be any less than hl2.

MetaMan 10-05-2003 10:03 PM

how badly do u guys want it?

arial 10-05-2003 10:05 PM

The source itself would be useless to a guy like me, since I only do PHP. But I a guess a rival would cream their panties over this even if it doesn't include, the sound, video, textures and all that mess. But I myself am eager to play this game.

Gateway69 10-07-2003 10:34 AM

Even more bad news today:

"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition."

and more news I heard today that their is now a beta of the game floating around its around 1.4 gigs

:(
