Have you hacked your TiVo?
 

Just curious if any nerds have hacked their tivo's yet. If so, what did you do to it?

I have a couple series 1's and a new series 2. The Series 2 has a wireless NIC.. so I'm trying to enable telnet so I can get in and break it.

Tivo runs on linux.. so you can do all kinds of stuff..

Increasing the storage space seems to be a common hack.

People have installed small web servers with little web based apps to control their tivo's with a web browser.

you can install ftp daemons and download tivo'd shows to your PC.

One guy installed a caller ID script so that when people called his house their numbers displayed on his tivo.

I also just saw a little app that can watch ebay auctions with your tivo!

People come up with some pretty ridiculous things, but it's still pretty cool that you can do it.

You could probably even host a gallery (slow gallery) on a tivo if you wanted to. ;)

I think the sony replay tv has a cable you can run straight to your computer and upload anything you want..even all your gay porn.

Tivo is the shit..

Although us poor folk just use sony replay tv..easier to hack

I hacked my Series 1 Tivo about 2 years ago and added a 100 Gig HD and a wireless nic card.

Once you install the drive and the nic card, you've already started installing things like Telnet, Shells & FTP. I installed that script that lets you completly control your Tivo remotely and it's pretty cool.

I also added the tool that enables you to start up a server so you can extract all the video & audio and burn it to DVD.

One thing I found while I was snooping around was the logs that Tivo keeps of all your viewing habits. That truly pissed me off. Every fucking button you hit on the remote and channel you watch it logged and sent to them. I ended up setting a cron to delete the logs every few minutes.
