med advice needed: how to stop a bleeding nose..

Ok.. ive been having a cold the last few days and my nose is kinda fucked up. For the last 10 hours every 30 minutes i start
bleeding like a bitch. My nose that is. Wont fucking stop.

This is fucking annoying.. where can i download a patch or any
other ideas how to fix this?

Try a tampon. It sounds goofy and you'll look like a jackass but it works.

Spunky 11-01-2003 09:00 PM

I would see a doc... sounds like you ruptured something

actually.. tampons and aborbing material like toilet paper make the bleeding worse: it basicly sucks the blood out of a wound
not giving the blood enough time to dry.

My son got a nosebleed tonight and he goes like a stuck pig whenever it happens.

To get it to stop when it's bleeding, get a cold damp washrag and apply it and pressure to your nose, tilting your head back. When you do finally tilt your head forward, do so SLOWLY, and don't blow/pick/wipe your nose for at least half an hour.

As for stopping it permanently, that's gonna have to wait until your cold is gone. The tissues inside are so aggravated from all the sniffling/blowing you're doing that nothing short of cauterizing the veins inside will make it stop. They just need some rest and time to heal and that won't happen until your cold is gone.
Try not to blow your nose so hard, take some zinc cough drops and mega doses of vitamin C to kick the cold as fast as possible.

And down the line if this keeps happening whenever you get a cold, you really might want to have a doctor cauterize the veins in there. My mom had to have it done when she was in her 20s. Didn't affect her sense of smell.

You're not supposed to tilt your head back because the blood might go down your throat.

Just pinch the entire soft part of the nose just above the nostrils and sit and lean forward and breathe through your mouth for 5 minutes.

the worst part about bloody noses is the blood booger afterwards. almost choke on that thing, nasty business. i used to get bloody noses all the time when i was a kid.

My nose used to bleed every week when I was growing up...

Take a piece of peper and fold it up small... lift your upper lip up and place the paper between the top/front gums and the upper lip... that is where the main vein is... then just press on your middle upper lip (under your nose) and the nose bleed will stop... after it gets wet... you can just flex your upper lip to press the folded paper against your inner/upper gum (hands free).

It works everytime.

I get nosebleeds all the damn time. I'm a walking barometer; when the barmetric pressure changes, i get a nosebleed. Something about my capillaries being too close to the surface or some shit.

Anyway, here's what I do.

Pinch the soft part between your eyes, where the bridge of your nose meets your forehead. Pinch your nostrils shut and breathe through your mouth for about five minutes and then don't sneeze, blow your nose, or pick it or anything for at least half an hour, or you'll just rupture the clot again.

Nyght 11-01-2003 10:31 PM

Like Carrie said you can just cauterize the inside of your nose. Just grab your soldering iron or wood burning iron and have at it. :thumbsup

One of the reasons it happens is the air is too dry in your house. Put a big sauce pan on with water and boil it. Do that a few times and the moisture level will go up inside and it should help the membranes.

I had one the other day from a bad cold and we did the water thing (it had been raspy feeling all day) and after the water got in the air it felt alot better. Didn't bleed after that either.

Drink some more fluids MINUS the alcohol and watch how much aspirin you're taking too.

I was having nosebleeds all the time last year. I haven't had as many this year since I started drinking bottled water.

DO NOT tilt your head back. this will lead to blood going into the lungs.

to stop a nose bleed pinch at the top of the bridge of your nose.
to cut off the blood flow and if you are still bleeding then its comeing from your sinus and you need to see a doctor

Try Starbucks instead of white powder.

Take a hot bath.

arkenon 11-02-2003 05:45 AM

Sit down.......cross your legs tight.......plug your nose, and fart... it will clear your mind :321GFY

Speaking as an EMT, only do this if you want to add nausea to your list of symptoms. You don't stop blood flow, you only redirect it. Then all the blood you just inadvertantly swallowed makes you sick. Pinch it and see a doctor ASAP.

(edit - frequent nosebleeds are sometimes signs of a bigger problem, such as high blood pressure. Especially if you don't stop bleeding after a while)

So many answers, so many myths. Never tilt your head backwards. I cannot speak from personal experience, but I'd follow the general concensus and pinch. Call a doctor if it continues to be a problem.

Also, lay off the coke. :thumbsup

Pre-med, actually. Gotta have something to fall back on.

Furious_Female 11-02-2003 10:06 AM

I have gone to the ER for my nose bleeding. I had a horrible sinus infection 2 years ago.... the first thing the triage nurse said was, don't tilt your head back, just pinch your nose gently and it works.

Avoid taking aspirins or any kind of blood thinners, it could make it worse. Don't blow your nose if you can avoid it for awhile, it could be triggering it over and over.
