Teen dies on school bus after head hits tree
Nov. 18, 2003
A Perry Meridian High School freshman died Monday morning after he leaned his head out the window of a moving school bus and struck a tree. The accident occurred on Stop 11 Road west of Bluff Road, about a mile north of the Johnson-Marion county line. Raul Gonzalez, 16, died quickly after he struck his head on the tree trunk, said Marion County Sheriff?s Department Lt. Phil Burton. The bus was moving at about 30 or 35 mph when the impact occurred. About 7:15 a.m., Gonzalez?s bus was headed eastbound on Stop 11 Road when the bus passed a tree standing a foot or more from the road, Burton said. it wasn?t clear why Gonzalez had stuck his head out the bus window. The bus driver didn?t realize anyone was hurt until she heard screams. She pulled the bus over near Forward Pass Road, less than a quarter-mile from Bluff Road, and called authorities. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene, Burton said. Karen Cantou, a spokeswoman for Perry Township schools, said the driver would be questioned and undergo routine blood-alcohol screenings and other tests. Neighbors to the site said vehicles had hit the tree repeatedly for years, and the tree was marked with green paint for removal. On the side of the tree facing the road, its base showed old scars. Gonzalez and his family had moved to Indianapolis from Texas two weeks ago. He was the last student to board the bus Monday. About 20 students were on the bus; they were transported to school on a different bus soon after the accident, Burton said. They were ushered into the school?s auditorium, where they received counseling, he said. Some Johnson County high school counselors monitored their students who might have known Gonzalez. Greenwood Community High School guidance director Bill Ronk said support would be available to Greenwood students, who go to school less than 10 miles from the crash site. http://thejournalnet.com/print.asp?A...ectionID =113 |

Well atleast he learned never to that again.

The really sad thing is that because the tree was marked to be cut down, the family will try to make some cash off the county. They will also go after the school district. Trying to make millions off of something that shoud have been prevented by the kid that lost his head.

Wonder if he was the HEAD of his class?
|
Pretty shitty but there's a reason why they tell you to keep you arms, legs, and head inside the bus.
|
thats sad news

"well he'll never be the head of a successfully company"
"it's not a good time to lose one's head" god I love Austin Powers.. a quote for almost every news story. |
Darwin award?

some much needed chlorine for the gene pool...
|
Talk about prior planning! Now *how* many don't believe in some higher power again??
Thats a shame. Out in the boonies of Indiana, the neighbors would have cut it down themselves long ago. At least up around the Marion Ft. Wayne area, they would have. I can't believe how narrow most of the roads are over there. I think they blacktopped wagon trails and decided the middle hump was where the lane dividing line went. |

Let's question the bus driver cuz the tree was a FOOT away from the bus and the stupid kid stuck his head out the window. Stupid people deserve to die! My take on it, if you're gonna stick your head out the window expect it to get hit by something!

You people are all fucking morons for making a joke out of this horrible accident!! Not something that should be joked about!

if the bus was moving 35 mph he probly didnt see the tree until too late. you people assume he saw it.
being the new kid in town, he probly didnt know the tree's history as described in the article. also leads you to wonder if some other kid dared him to stick his head out, knowing the tree would scare him. being the new kid, he was probly looking for acceptance and did it... not knowing the reason for the dare was the tree... no one ever expects a tree to be that close to the road. read the article & think about when you were a teenager and some new kid was on the bus. |
