What the fuck is Google doing?

Results are all fucked up, it seems that they are phasing out commercial sites. They did a major algorithm change and shit's just all fucked up. I was hoping to get my mainstream site in a good spot, well I finally got a pagerank of 5, but it won't show up at all for my keywords!

This is going to piss a lot of companies off that depend on revenue because of search engine placement.

IPO

TurboTrucker 12-06-2003 06:59 PM

You'd think they wouldn't want to turn their search engine into a big pile of crap before going public.

Oh and...http://www.scroogle.org/fiasco.html if you're interested. Been going on for 3-4 weeks or so now.

nuclei 12-06-2003 07:21 PM

It is rumored that HillTop is the reason. They may be switching to showing more relevant links according to linkages to "expert" sites.

modelgigtalent 12-06-2003 07:24 PM

Fuck man. My site was ALL over google before, now its not, oh well, time to start buying ads. lol

:BangBang:

I'd love to know who the so called 'experts' are. The true experts I know will say something very, very different :) But then spend some time searching more commercial results youself. Relevancy is something thay are not achieving unless you count ebay sites, sites with nothing to do with the subject matter and spammy directories as relevant. Unfortunately most self-proclaimed experts are anything but.

Some are, some aren't. It's a mixed blessing.

stocktrader23 12-06-2003 07:44 PM

Go to scroogle.com and look at the missing results for the term "webcam sex".

100 of 100 missing results.

This filter sucks.

Edit: By the way, Paris Hilton terms haven't been effected yet. Everyone that is planning on retiring on their first page listings better watch out.

He's talking about expert sites, ie a variant of authorities.

That scroogle site has a very good theory about them targetting affiliate and commerce sites. Have a read, search some terms for yourself and you decide. They are purposely filterering webmasters out of the equation for now. :winkwink:

CoolE 12-06-2003 08:05 PM

I think it's not just webmasters who will notice that Google has gone insane, but surfers too...

I went to sign up for a programming course at my local community college earlier tonight. I can never remember the url, so I usually just go to Google and type in the name of the college and my city name. When I did that the number 1 result was some press release from some company sponsoring a fucking chocolote show at the college. The number 2 result was the college but not the main page, rather it was some obscure page on some specific program they offer. The 3 to 10 results were 3rd party pages again, organizations loosely affiliated with the college - everything from lifeguard lessons to technology symposiums. The main page of the college was nowhere to be found on the first page of the results.

Google will have to fix or undo what they have done, the results are just complete crap.

I am sure the owner of google wakes up every morning and keeps all these companies in mind as they create their index.
