WTF wrong with my computer?

Ok... bust out the operator and windows jokes if you want

But for those that can help...

It just locks up
mouse wont move, keyboard does nothing
its just sitting there, doesnt respond to anything

if i turn it off for a while, it will work again but just for a little while then it locks up again

running win2k-pro

any ideas?

IntenseCash 12-29-2003 02:18 AM

check your system resources... have you installed anything recently?

aflex 12-29-2003 02:18 AM

Mr Pheer 12-29-2003 02:19 AM

yes of course, all 25 of the machines on the rack

irishfury 12-29-2003 02:20 AM

Sounds like something gone with the hardware from the sounds of it could be anything though.....

Gruntled 12-29-2003 02:20 AM

check for spyware. something is eating all of your memory, whether it's something you are running on purpose or not.

nofx 12-29-2003 02:21 AM

get more RAM

IntenseCash 12-29-2003 02:23 AM

I would think it might be hardware as well... something with the motherboard. check the system resources though.. make sure the IRQ's didnt get screwed up.

I had a problem similar to this, happended shortly after my wife opened an email attachment.. hahahaha.. The virus was spreading thru all the folders planting itself all over.. Ended up being like 80,000 copies of the virus all over the drive, ended up having to reformat, long story short, my wife NEVER EVER touches this computer any more..

smproduction 12-29-2003 02:24 AM

If software is ok, I would think to something broken in the cooling system

SomeCreep 12-29-2003 02:25 AM

to much spamming

mule 12-29-2003 02:25 AM

I had that same thing with win2k
can't for the life of me remember what fixed it, though.
(it's been a while)
The things I did:
Go to windows update regularly
Update anti-virus regularly
Run AdAware and Spybot regularly
Xteq Systems from lockergnome.com is very useful for deciding which memory-resident things you load at startup....come to think of it, it was probably after some tweaking with this one that I got rid of the problem.

irishfury 12-29-2003 02:26 AM

Do you use heat sync are all the fans working most likely it's not irq conflict cause you get blue screen and it's not Ram....Almost sure it's hardware related...

Mr Pheer 12-29-2003 02:26 AM

Sitting idle, CPU usage is at 0%
memory says 66016k / 1277772k

no email runs on this machine though, and its behind a pretty good firewall

I'll run a virus scan just in case though

yeah the CPU has a heat sink with a fan.. is it possible the fan just broke?

would that make the machine just lock up?

Rorschach 12-29-2003 02:30 AM

Sounds like hardware to me as well. One of my workhorses just died after three years of faithful service. It had started getting random lock ups when it never had them before (even on fresh OS installs), and weird bugs in software that had been stable for ages. One day I had just finished compiling something, I tried out the new software and it was totally buggy and I thought "well that's a shit program" and then the motherboard died, total meltdown, even the door on the cd drive wouldn't close. So you might want to back that machine up.

irishfury 12-29-2003 02:31 AM

Alot of times if this happens you would get a blue screen.....with it over heating you lose system stability......sometimes you can find the cpu temp in the bios or you could use a inside outside themometer.....

JDog 12-29-2003 02:31 AM

Sounds more like a hardware issue! Check your fans, check your memory! Your CPU might be overheating!

In my case it wasn't hardware, it was DEFINITELY software.
It was the exact same problem
Really, install Xteq Systems from lockergnome.com and play with which memory-resident programs load at startup. I'm almost postive that that was the way I fixed it in the end.

Mr Pheer 12-29-2003 02:41 AM

running windows update now... had like 24 critical updates

i hope it doesnt lock up before it finishes :)

If that didn't work try:

1) A roll back as some nasty little plugin might be doing it.

2) Make sure your rack is facing North. It could be a fung shui thing :Graucho

twistyneck 12-29-2003 06:10 AM

Make the switch.

TiGrrPrr 12-29-2003 06:11 AM

Not sure. It's whatever direction the sparrows fly for the summer... and don't ask me African or European :Graucho

Spunky 12-29-2003 07:24 AM

It could be the processor fan packed it in.

try switching ports.

if you're using USB try switching to PS2 and if you're using PS2 ports try using USB instead.

Sosa 12-29-2003 08:34 AM

Def could be a fan, the computer will just lock up if the fan is spinning slow or not spinning at all.

MikeFold 12-29-2003 08:40 AM

since i am not tech oriented at all, and the same OS...
I disabled all the "sounds" that accompany the tasks.
[it seemed to happen when i would mouse click]
did that 3 weeks ago and went from 7-8 lockups a day to none.

weird......

I also cleaned the fans [i smoke and it definitely showed]

Heather Hamptons 12-29-2003 08:56 AM

I had a smiliar problem yesterday. (well it started on x-mas day) I couldnt get anything to open. It either said that my .DLL files were missing, I was out of memory, or it would just lock up.

I ran ad-aware and that helped, but not enough. I ended up having to back up all my files and then I reformatted my hard drive, and installed new drivers. I spent all day yesterday doing this.

I was a little pissy at first with having to spend the day trying to fix shit, but now I am 100% better. I even upgraded my windows.

No more problems :)

jas1552 12-29-2003 09:27 AM

I've had that problem with two computers. The first time it was a virus. The second time was very strange. I had a warranty and I kept sending it into the manufacturer and they sent it back every time saying there was nothing wrong with it. I then put it in a computer repair shop for like 2 days and they also said they couldn't find a problem and couldn't get it to freeze. I couldn't use it for 20 minutes without it freezing. Then my HD died and replacing it didn't fix the problem. I ended up just upgrading the motherboard and CPU which finally fixed it.

Va2k 12-29-2003 09:42 AM

Make sure you blow all the dust out of the inside your puter and clean the fans..
