Atlanta - Help If You Know It!

Hello!

I need some help from anybody who lives in or near or ever has lived (or visited frequently) Atlanta, Georgia.

Never been there personally, except for layovers at the airport on my way to other places but now my girlfriend may want to move there for school related reasons, so I would like to know what its like there?

How is it to live in Atlanta or the surrounding areas? I don't want to ask specific questions because I want to know whatever you have to offer on the area. Any helpful links also.

Also, if any adult web companies, sponsors etc. may be hiring someone from the area she will be looking for a job. She is an awesome web programmer and currently works for the Department of National Defense programming their intranet (over 2 years now), so she has experience :) NO SHES NOT A M0DEL!!! :winkwink:

Atlanta the cost of living is cheap but the people are very unsociable by nature. That sums it up lol.

I lived in Georgia all of my life until just recently. Atlanta is a beautiful city but the traffic is an utter NIGHTMARE. NEVER, EVER get on 285 or 85 near Atlanta between 6 AM and 9 AM and between 4 PM and 8 PM unless you have a death wish because if an accident doesn't kill you, you'll probably want to kill yourself just to get out of it.

It's very, very expensive to live there. Rent is CRAZY expensive. That's one of the main reasons we moved. Atlanta and all of the surrounding cities are very expensive, especially Norcross and Duluth. Some of the less expensive cities that are still somewhat close to Atlanta are Tucker, Clarkston, Decatur, and Buford, although Buford is probably becoming more expensive since they built the big Mall of Georgia there. It's a very nice mall, though and they have really great burbon chicken at the food court at Bourbon Street Grill. Buford would be my first choice of where to live if I moved back because the traffic is lighter but there are still a TON of places to shop beside the mall and lots of restaurants and such, plus it's not as expensive as, say, Duluth. But Duluth is a great place because there is a TON of stuff there. Lots more than Buford.

If you like city life, Atlanta is a great place to live. But if you hate traffic and crowds you will probably hate it very much. I suggest visiting for a week or so before you move there.

Some good places to visit are Underground Atlanta (it's an area in midtown with tons of shops that are really underground and there's a beautiful fountain where alot of business people eat lunch), Six Flags, Zoo Atlanta (they have a fantastic reptile and amphibian exhibit and the pandas are super cool), Stone Mountain (during the summer you can see the laser show and fireworks at Stone Mountain at night... BRING A BLANKET to sit on, if you don't you'll have to sit on the grass, the show is projected onto the mountainside and it is free, you just have to pay a couple of bucks for parking... and during the day you can picnic, climb the mountain, visit their museums and ride the train), White Water (great water park if you like swimming), Q-Zar (fun laser tag). Those are just a few places that I like to visit.

Also, I recommend Helen, Geogia. It's around 2 hours north of Atlanta, but it's like visiting an Alpine village in the U.S. There's lots to do there like 'Hooching (inner tubing in rented tubes down the Chattahoochee river), panning for gold, camping, fishing, shopping... and there is a fantastic candy shop that makes fresh, homemade candy and gives free samples and a cute little amusement park. It's simply beautiful.

Tybee Island near Savannah (in south Georgia) is alot of fun, too. It has beautiful beaches and it's very peaceful and not as crowded as Florida beaches. Sandra Bullock has a big mansion on the beach there.

How long ago did you live here. Must have quite a while ago. Underground Atlanta is a ghost town and has been for quite a few years. It's also not located in Midtown.

I lived there for a summer .. worked in Alpharetta .. which is North of Atlanta, beautiful up there and I lived in Lawrenceville which was a subburb east of Atlanta. The summers are super hot. When I was there they kept talking about a weather phenomenon that the concrete in Atlanta was producing so much heat that by the afternoon that heat would drift east and clash with the cooler air and product thunderstorms every afternoon. Not sure if that was an el nino type thing or if thats still going on. They have smog days too, bad air advisories when you shouldn't be working outdoors.

I'd move back though, I enjoyed working up there.
