People Spamming Viruses With Your Email Address

Has this happened to you yet? People spamming viruses to others and forging the email so it looks like it was sent from an email on a site you run.

What is one suppose to do in this situation, report what is happening to your ISP and webhost? What works for making sure you stay out of trouble?

Dirty F 03-03-2004 07:51 PM

Do a search, there are tons of topics about it.

It makes no sense reporting this.

The people sending the viruses dont even know they are sending it.

Spunky 03-03-2004 07:51 PM

Yes it's happening to me..I heard it happened to Juicy as well..People are writing back saying WTF? I think I should be doing a virus check .

ParasiteTV 03-03-2004 07:52 PM

yup this happened to me just recently... i keep getting replies from companies I never emailed saying that i sent them a virus in an attachment.

fuckers.

Dirty F 03-03-2004 07:52 PM

The only thing you can do is not having your email on your site. The virus finds emails in the internet cache of the infected person and thats where your site is.

BRISK 03-03-2004 07:52 PM

I think it's happening because that's how the virus was designed. I don't think people are spamming others with the virus using your email address. The virus is picking up your email address from somewhere and changing the "from" field to make it look like you sent it.

We wouldn't have this problem if morons would just stop opening email attachments sent from random people.

Spunky 03-03-2004 07:58 PM

I actually recieved a email with an attchment from my service provider Telus.net and in the letter they said My email was going to be disabled due to abuse. and placed a url to the homepage.I was to use a password to activate it .
Naturally I was concerned because of this virus shit so I called the support and they said these fuckers are targeting service providers ..good thing I called them before I opened it.

BRISK 03-03-2004 08:00 PM

Never ever never open email attachments UNLESS YOU KNOW WHO IT IS FROM

and even then you should be concerned if it's any filetype that can be a virus (like .exe)

Because we all have sites. Surfers visits our site and a lot of surfers are infected. They are spreading the mails, not the webmasters.

Whats there to report man??? Once again, these people dont even know theyre infected. Its not like they are after you. And for every person you report there are 10 new people infected.

It's been happening to me a lot. It's funny when I get an email from myself with a virus. I've gotten a few emails form peoples sites here on GFY too, so that shit is going around. Not a whole lot you can do except ride it out. Fucking spammers. :321GFY

This version is Bagle.J

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1542021,00.asp

[...]

Like its predecessors, this version relies heavily on social engineering to entice recipients into opening the e-mail and infected attachment. The subject line of the worm-laden e-mail varies, but is typically one of the following:

E-mail account security warning
Notify about using the e-mail account
Warning about your e-mail account
Important notify about your e-mail account
Email account utilization warning
Notify about your e-mail account utilization
E-mail account disabling warning

The sending address is spoofed to make it appear as if the message is from someone in the recipient's domain. Some of the sending addresses include [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected], where "domain.com" is the recipient's own domain.

The name of the attachment carrying Bagle.J also varies, and the file itself can be an executable, a .PIF or a ZIP archive, according to NAI, based in Santa Clara, Calif.

I am getting tired of all these freaking viruses :( If you submit to TGPs I am sure you will be getting many viruses daily to that account :helpme

KRL 03-04-2004 06:35 AM

Happens all the time, especially when you own thousands of domains.

I just notify my ISP's the minute I detect it, so they have the heads up.

roscoe98 03-04-2004 06:37 AM

Yup i get that all the time..Not that i spam or anything.

:Graucho

djmick 03-04-2004 06:45 AM

You should use SpamArrest.

You only receive e-mail that is either authorised by yourself or by the sender and most of this shit is automated so it never gets authorised.

You can still check through the stuff that hasn't been authorised.

Here is a quick summary of mine.

Messages Processed 7290
Messages Forwarded 425

Thats more than 6500 spam eliminated.

$20 for 6 months, money well spent.
