becoming a DMOZ editor

has anyone ever attempted this and succeeded?

Do they actually check these apps over at DMOZ?

I dont klnow... But I sure doo wish google would recalcualte PR and update its directory.. I recently got a bunch of mainstream listings in DMOZ

greentea 03-03-2004 08:53 PM

Most of the DMOZ editors are rogue. Dont waste your time. Just my :2 cents:

It is very fucking hard, I will tell you that. I think it's best to try for a very small category though. I think from there, you can eventually move to what you really want with time?

There was a post on this at the PC boards and someone met some of adult DMOZ editors at a conference in Florida. In short, they told him that they weren't taking anymore adult editors unless it was someone they decided to allow into their little club.

I do edit a DMOZ category but its not pornrelated.

Nysus 03-03-2004 09:21 PM

It's a pretty unfair system now adays. And full of rogue editors as greentea said seems to be a valid statement.

Cheers,
Matt

timboss, apply to a sub-category that doesn't have alot of listings and doesn't have an editor. Be honest in your application as to why you are interested in becoming an editor. Give examples of what you think is missing in that particular category ( something that should be listed but isn't there) - you can use one of your sites if it belongs in that sub-category. Write a good description and you should get a response. If you have other questions, you can contact me.

yep exactly, the golden days of becoming an editor was 2-3 years ago. It is an inner circle who mainly look out for there own sites and freinds. Some one said DMOZ was cleaning up there act, i highly doubt that. Dont waste your time submitting an app.

slackologist 03-03-2004 09:24 PM

i know one current and one ex adult dmoz editor.. neither come here often if at all.

greentea, I know that there was a major cleaning of editors before I got accepted. We are collectively working on cleaning it up - rules are changing and submissions are being reviewed & cleanup is done on sites that don't fit the criteria.

As far as I'm concerned, DMOZ is a waste! Submitted several sites, never got a response or listed.

To those above that say things are getting cleaned up, I hope you're right!

For now I see sites that have two galleries on them and that's about it listed. While my TGP, with tons of content, informative articles etc. won't even earn a return email.

I read through all the info on what was required for posting and have made sites to meet the specifications! No email and no listing.

XxXotic 03-03-2004 09:43 PM

dmoz looks for UNIQUE content, they're NOT a search engine, it's a directory, there IS a difference. They're not in the business of listing 500 sites with the same exact shit. they never have and they never will.

If you submit a site that's even remotely similiar to another site already seated in the directory, chances are it won't be listed. If it's a site with a bunch of "referral links" it will NOT be listed...

stop treating dmoz like it's google, because it's not and you won't get lised if you do. If you set your sites up right you'll be listed.

read it, it usually helps :winkwink:

You mean you guys don't have your own inside man at DMOZ?

no sense in relying on others :winkwink:

ibuydomains 03-03-2004 09:53 PM

Why would you want to become an editor? DMOZ gives almost no traffic and very little PR

What category are you submitting to? It may also depend on where you are in queue......how long ago did you submit and did you try resubmitting again? If you tried resubmitting again, you may have put yourself at the end of the line again.

Look at all the sites listed! A ton of TGPs very similar + I made sites to fit what they asked for.

First time, I'd have to guess at about a year and ahalf ago?

Then about the first of this year for pussyluvers.

Maybe I should spam them with submits? I have a few sites. Some are just small free sites, you know the buck makers or feeder sites.

To give you the exact categories, I had have to go look. I made sure that the site fit in the category.

Awhile back google said they relied a lot on DMOZ for listings. Plus it was the talk of the day on the SEO boards.

+ anything you can do to help that PR and word placement helps traffic. I understand there is a difference between PR1 and PR 1.5. How would anyone know for sure, unless you worked at google.

Well that's Fucking great, a 17 year old making decisions on wether to list a site or not. I hope the sites category fits his age, like games or something.

Nope its actually something relevant to some people. Just not porn. I wish I could get him to transfer into the category I need a listing in.

pussyluver 03-03-2004 10:31 PM

Well that makes me feel good. The people doing the editing may or may not be qualified..

Trax 03-04-2004 03:08 AM

ive been waiting for ultra clean sites to be added for a year now
i give up
pretty obvious to me that the faggot editor does not want any other sites besides his own to be in that category
pretty sad

CamChicks 03-04-2004 03:27 AM

I have submitted CAMCHICKS.COM to the appropriate category/s on DMOZ several times, without success. Use their feedback form to try and contact editors. No response. It's really frustrating.
I even volunteered to edit the camgirl-related categorys myself, since noone else is doing it. (closest editor is way up the chain) Again, no response.

HeadPimp 03-04-2004 03:35 AM

I applied a couple times as an editor for BBW sites (my specialty) and got rejected both times... Kind of think the deck is stacked...

VeriSexy 03-04-2004 03:48 AM

Yup, basically they only add their own or their friends sites. It use to be allot easier to get into DMOZ :(
