Human Verification, like thehun, register.com etc

Im talking about those things where you see and image with numbers/letters and you have to type what you see in a box to prove you are human.

Has anyone built a script to do these automatically yet? i have no use for them myself, i aws just curious. They seem like they would be fairly easy to overcome if you use OCR software.

Anyone have any insights?

I've written quite a few of them and there is a trick around people using OCR to get the text. It's commonly known as cross-hatching (yea, just like in 7th grade art class).

Basically instead of "S0m3 73X7" the text would be skewed and on the layer above the text would be lines and quite possibly a gradient to aid in throwing any OCR's off.

Nothing is fool-proof, but you can at least slow the readers down.

i have noticed that. i think if someone build a script for one specific web site, eg register.com, they could take this into account though.

im wondering how good the technology actually is

asher, why does this thread and your discussion in it make me think you're the same asher from isreal that ripped off a ton of webmasters.

just seems too FISHY.

I've read a story on some tech website about pornographers with join4free style sites using them to crack those codes in real time (eg. for phishing), by hotlinking (or copying) the image from whatever site they wanted to sign up for and putting it on theie email site join page. The surfer signing up for the porn uncodes the image text for them, which is then passed to the script that is signing up on the other site.

I will verify he is NOT that asher. I met Asher in Sydney some weeks back. And I can assure you he is not from Israel.

I saw you mention this before Sleazy (a while back), but I guarantee you this guy is not the Israeli you are looking for.

Those are called CAPTCHAs. See:

http://www.captcha.net/

If you search on Google, there are some free scripts to do what you want. They're designed to beat OCR -- it's a challenge in Artificial Intelligence, i.e. design a test that a human can pass easily, but represents a difficult problem for a computer.
