Al Jazeera - What A Biased & Tilted News Source

Al Jazeera which is supposed to be the CNN of the Middle East.

Bullshit.

http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage

What a one sided perspective.

They really give the US a bad image every chance they get.

Perspectives are one sided by definition. Looks like they think the same of us.

If you want real anti-US bias, check out the Saudi newspaper Al Arabiya, or Abu Dhabi TV.

Al Jazeera is an arab (Qatari) media organization, so it looks at the world from the arab perspective. Would you expect CNN to look at the world from anything other than a US/western perspective?

Given that proviso, Al Jazeera is as balanced as most western media, although unlike western media, it doesn't achieve balance by sanitising its output and dumbing everything down. Instead, AJ allows a full range of views to be expressed. Sure it carried interviews with Osama Bin Laden but Tony Blair, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell have also had air time. Its talk shows and debates are open to the full range of arab opinion.

At any rate AJ is balanced enough for the Israelis to claim it is pro-Palestinian while several Arab countries (including Iraq when SH was still in charge), have banned Al Jazeera for being too pro-western (or at least unsympathetic to their regimes). And despite 35 million viewers (for the TV station) they have a problem finding advertisers who fear a backlash from Saudi Arabia if they do business with the station.

It is biased, but tame as far as Arab media goes. In terms of its level of bias (cultural, political) I'd put it on a par with CNN..

Digipimp 04-09-2004 02:28 AM

Al Jazeera is pretty good if you ask me. Yeah it's slightly slanted against the US, but if it's news to you that virtually every media outlet outside of the US in not a big fan of the US then you're missing out. I was said they are pretty tame. It's also notable that nearly every government in the middle east doesn't like them either. They are bar far the most people oriented news outlet in the world probably, they truly speak for their people as opposed to a government.

boneprone 04-09-2004 02:30 AM

CNN may be biased, but its no where near FOX..

Id say Fox is our version of Al Jazera

goBigtime 04-09-2004 02:38 AM

It's an arab-ran media outlet in the middle east....

what slant did you expect?

How many times does our media (Fox, CNN or otherwise) report good things in the middle east or about middle easterns?

Corleone 04-09-2004 02:45 AM

So you've been "fox"-ed, right?

Of course, there's good things to report in every situation. It's just that the media don't make any money on good news - "Just gimme those Princess Diana dies in a car crash headlines..."

KraZ 04-09-2004 02:59 AM

And just for the (KRL) record, I reviewed the homepage of Al Jazeera and it doesn't look like an extremely biased source. In fact they do sound like they have some journalistic integrity.

It's just that their perspective is different. And yes, I do have a degree in MassComm so I can talk about journalistic integrity :)

CamChicks 04-09-2004 04:15 AM

The US media is also biased. But it's not because of some big government conspiracy; the cause is much simpler than that. Especially in the climate of hyper-patriotism since 9-11, what do you think would happen to a US networks advertising revenue if they reported on stories that made the US look bad?

DR_PHIL 04-09-2004 04:23 AM

both are biasis, even are network channels have party biasis

69pornlinks 04-09-2004 05:22 AM

:1orglaugh , and fox is fair and unbalanced....what a fucking joke..evceryone is biased....find me ANY news source that isn't biased....

69pornlinks 04-09-2004 05:25 AM

What a one sided perspective.

They really give the US a bad image every chance they get.

The US is already giving itself a bad image. I expect news channels to give us the news but I don't expect them to be unbiased. Of course the Bush admin can't take the heat though and have already forced Al-Jazeera to take off a couple of cartoons.

Not a big fan of the channel but I like how direct there interviews are with both sides. Nothing is held back, they just give it to you like it is.

What do you expect them to say, the invasion and occupation of a Muslim country along with the killing of thousands of innocents is a good thing?
