is pennywize any good? Why or why not? What else is there that is good for proctecting members area sections.

Password Sentry is the best....you set IP threshold ,etc. and get an email when a user is suspended. Also provides server snapshot, etc. ....

Been using it on all my sites over a year now, I wouldn't use anything else!

Take a look at Strongbox. Pennywize does nothing to prevent brute force password loss.
