Microsoft hahahahahahas update won't work on pirated copies

http://www.securitypipeline.com/show...cleID=20300861

"Microsoft this week denied reports that hahahahahahas XP Service Pack 2, which includes extensive security fixes, will be available for users running pirated versions of hahahahahahas... Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said last month that Microsoft makes security patches available to all users, even pirates, as a means of limiting the spread of viruses and worms. But Microsoft said this week that SP2 will, before installation, check the operating system's Product ID against a list of known pirated PIDs. If the operating system comes up as illegitimate, the update won't install."

Of course, this means those of us who did pay for hahahahahahas will have to deal with the spreading of virii from those who pirate it.

PiksalDesign 05-16-2004 01:58 PM

If you bought hahahahahahas, there should not be another copy anywhere unless you made it, or gave out your reg. no.

How do you figure that? As long as YOU'RE patched, the pirates can only spread the virii among themselves. The only thing you'll have to worry about is getting those stupid virus emails from someone who has you in their address book but you should get less and less of those as only the pirates will remain vulnerable.

Whoo I've been running a warez copy for years and a few days ago I finally formatted and bought the damn thing :thumbsup

kmanrox 05-16-2004 02:01 PM

i guess i'll have to re-reg this install to one of my legit copies... oh well..

zzgundamnzz 05-16-2004 02:02 PM

Pirated copies haven't been able to install Service Pack two since last year...

TexasGuy 05-16-2004 02:06 PM

That should put an end to pirate copies ... and increase the value of my microsoft stocks :)

crockett 05-16-2004 02:06 PM

I'm sure there will be a crack for it.. I personally don't mind buying a OS but I think the price should be lowered or you should be allowed to install on at least two computers at the current price.. win-dows is the most popular OS and always has been.. there is no reason for it to cost as much as it dose as they sell more than enough copies to lower the price.

AdultDesigners 05-16-2004 02:16 PM

Wake up ppl.
30-40% of the working w.i.ndows OSes are pirated.
Not to mention my country where w.indows piracy rate is almost 99% :)
Anyway .. I use linux .. Much more stable , faster and less problems with it.

LOL ''Microsoft '' :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Rictor 05-16-2004 02:21 PM

I agree with the 30-40% pirated estimate above and much higher rates outside the U.S.

I only buy prefab computers (Sonys, Dells, etc.) that come with a licensed copy of hahahahahahas so it's never been a concern for me, but when you have millions of users out there with pirated copies (and let's face it, a lot of them our offices and business) it means that virii are spread quickly and even if you can't be infected personally, that doesn't mean it won't slow down the Internet for everyone with millions of these e-mails bouncing back and forth on the networks.

KRL 05-16-2004 02:26 PM

I always buy Microsoft software. That's your main operating system and the one you shouldn't chance to a pirated copy.

Doubtful. The average computer user would have no idea where to even get pirated copies of any software.

PostWhore 05-16-2004 02:34 PM

SP1 wanst available for known pirated licences also. Not for long though

as all software, the theft is calculated into the price.

you think Photoshop's price isnt fixed to figure in pirated damage? it is.

Think again moron.. Those 8 million unpatched computers can pack quite a punch..

ever heard of ddos or understand how it works...

Wonder how far you would get with 8 million unpatched computers knocking on your door. All the patches in the world wont help you..

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-16-2004 05:57 PM

Its a political bid in disguise telling government to start fighting piracy.

Nice strategy and ya peeps better start getting liscenses for Microsoft or ya better get ready to change your OS.

If you're running a business based around computers, buy your fucking operating system.

Software, OS's, Registrars .. all things you need. Don't cheap out on them.

You mean script kiddies with a pirate XP can't update.
People that know what they are doing have no problem updating
and it doesn't take a key changer. All KBxxxxxx updates are available
as full file downloads. You don't have to use the Windows Update
site to install all KBxxxxxx updates.
