New Computers! Who's got the best, what would you buy and configure?

Lookin' at the new stuff and am amazed at the advances in computers.

Before I go a-buyin', what would you purchase? What would you configure? If you had to build one with new parts what would you hook up?

Right now its all about 64bit heaven. If you can spring for it go for it. You wont regret it. If you run linux your already set. But if your a windows fan you will have to wait tell christmas as thats when the 64bit XP version will start shipping unless im mistaken.

Alienware area 51,
3.06 GHz 800mhz FSB
1024 megs ram
80 gig hard drive and 3 expanion drive bays.
256Meg Geforce 5600 Ultra Video Card
9 internal cooling fans, Hums like a spacecraft and glows in the dark.

Sony E540 22" inch (21 viewable) flat screen monitor.

Alot of people will say alienware is overpriced, and they may well be, but for the price, you get hellacious performance. If your gonna build your own, definately get a processor with a fast Front Side Bus, 800 or higher. and the more ram the better. Video card, 128 is fine for most applications unless your into serious gaming, and the amount of ram a card has does not always mean its better, Nvidia or Radeon are your best bets.

mdcq, one badass looking unit. the monitor could be better but that tower and keyboard is good looks

That alienware does like very hot indeed.

I have all dell's here w/flat panels. Very reliable machines and easy to work on.

Dell:thumbsup

actually the monitor is probably one of the best I've found for design work. flat panel monitors have a native resoloution, and that sucks when playing with images that arent native to that resoloution. Mine is a flat screen CRT, If you do design work I suggest using a CRT as opposed to a flat panel, more accurate color representation and image clarity. Unless were talking sky high priced flat panel units.

I need a new computer asap!

I actually thought about that, alot of trouble to do though because the top of the monitor and side has ventilation holes. would have to find a way to get the case off the monitor.
