Can u take out a PCI card when computer is running
I disconnected a running HD and CDROM before but can u do it with PCI card, or will it lock up
|
not recommended.
|
You shouldn't disconnect anything in side the case when the box is on.
A little thing called electricity. Not to mention it could seriously fuck up the mother board..... |
but will the computer lock up if u do?

IOW, NEVER EVER disconnect or connect anything while the power is on. PERIOD. It's a very very bad idea. |
yeah thats what i though. But i had a bad mobo once and sometimes the harddrive wouldnt detect, so I would have to connect and disconnect it to get it to register.
|
disconnect/reconnect the power??
the IDE cable, i could see possibly but still dangerous - screwing with a PCI card while the machine is on will most likely fry your motherboard and possibly your CPU/RAM/HD at the same time. |

thats what i was thinking about as well, doing it at the PS is not that dangerous/harmful... but doing it at the component level could send a charge back and burn everything connected to it.

....how hard is it just to turn the machine off?
|
Your thread title suggests you were asking if you can pull a PCI card out of it's slot on the mother board while it's running.
Dont do that. If your cdrom and/or harddrive controller is that flaky, then maybe your problem is related to the seating of the PCI card. But turn the shit off and wait a minute before you yank it out. Blow the dust out, and reseat it, lol. |
